Urban Nature
Rationale: Why is this case interesting?
This is an example of a good and a bad use of nature in an urban area. On one hand, it shows how nature can solve problems by a good management of it and, on the other hand, how a bad maintenance of it can make the problem worse. This is directly related to my life, this is the view a have from my window and the first thing I see when I go to the street.
Author's perspective
As an Architecture student I am approaching this case focusing on the use of the nature in this environment, an area that has to be, not just seen but also lived. I decided to divide the case in two ways of procedure: good use and bad use.
What is there, what we want of it to be there, the way we manage to get it and the final appearance.
Landscape and/or urban context of your case
The city where this case takes part is named Kassel, is a town located on the Fulda River in northern Hesse, Germany. This city counts with many parks and Green spaces, for example the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This city doesn’t have the typical German architecture, and it is because of its history: during the World War II Kassel was an important city, well located, so it could be considered as an aim for enemies and the most severe bombing of Kassel in World War II destroyed 90% of the downtown area.
Post-war, most of the ancient buildings were not restored, and large parts of the downtown area were completely rebuilt in the style of the 1950s. A few historic buildings, even thought, remains. That is why this case I am presenting, can not be compared to the common garman way of procedure.
Analytical drawings
Projective drawings
It would be really nice if the idea of creating a green space into the urban structure would have been taken to its extreme, that way it would have had so much potential. Planting many other trees could do of this place a great "break" in the city, like a breathing space, increasing its strength along the years.
Summary and conclusion
A good example of how nature can be part of daily life, sometimes making it nicer with great green areas in the city structure, and other times, a bad maintenance of what could be a nice space, providing a worse appearance than without the nature part. On the other hand, its good use, allows to manage the space according to whats desired: What is there, what we want of it to be there, the way we manage to get it and the final appearance.
