Rationale: Why is this case interesting?

This is an innovative example of the integration of modern ecological structures of buldings in the nature. It 's nice to see such a natural-human relationship can be planned.

Tagged : Give and take

It is important to maintain a balance between economic benefits and the existing environment, so there can be emerged exciting concepts. This image represents a well modified example of important questions of all modern solarparks : ecologically? socially? aesthetically?

I chose this landscape because the planning of solarparks currently occupies an important place in my internship and my work in the family business. I want to look at the point of Landscape planning approaches and see all options of local planting design and planting structures within an energy park and integrate into current projects. In the future i want to analyze the planting design of the German landscape architects to see which approaches can be transferred into the planning of compensatory areas of solarparks . The aim is to integrate buildings with planting design in the nature and thereby increasing the public acceptance .

Author's perspective

As a planner of renewable energies and from my knowledge of interior design I would like to analyze some important issues in confrontation of the solar garden Gänsdorf . For the first time it is important to know in which place of urban context the project is, which environment is being affected and what needs arise in each case.

Basically, most people in our population want have renewable energy, because of acute events, such as a environmental disaster for example “Fukushima”. It is also sure that the time has come for the energy revolution and people want be independent of time with huge nuclear power plants.

But where do we build our green energy ?

Many people are of the opinion: Yes, we want sustainable energy such as solar farms and wind turbines etc. but please do not just plan it in front of my door. This represents a main problem for all approvals of such projects.

But I think the landscape architects can help to decide for such a project by developing aesthetic concepts and create new valuable habitats for humans and animals there.

Landscape and/or urban context of your case

The “Gäuboden”

The Gäuboden or Dungau is a region in lower Bavaria, which stretches to a length of about 15 kilometers from the south of the Donau river and the bavarian forest. It is one of the largest loess areas of southern Germany. Because of the rich mineral and well-aerated layers of loess there could be developed very fertile soils. On these there grow potatoes and corn, vegetables and sugar beets beside other classic cereals. Because of their structural poverty the flat Dungau plain is called as "agricultural veldt".

The solar field Gänsdorf contributes with approximately 20,000 planted trees and about 130 ha new meadow areas to a significant increase of biodiversity and discharge of the previously heavily sprayed and fertilized agricultural land.

Princess Gloria of Thurn und Taxis wanted to dispose of her agricultural property Gänsdorf and sold 120 hectares of the best farmland. In addition there were 30 hectares of the holding Makhofen which belongs to Baron of Poschinger-Bray. The areas are located next to the main road B 8 between Plattling and Straßkirchen. The solar plant is removed from villages, has distance to neighboring farms and archaeological cultural monuments.

Sketch of landscape and urban context

Analytical drawings

Please add four analytical sketches/drawings (or montages/schemes) of your case and take the following aspects into account:

  • natural dynamic versus cultural framework - in how far do these two forces come together in your case?
  • dynamic through the year (you may imagine how the site looks in spring and summer, maybe you also remember it)
  • highlight potentials and problems

Projective drawings

  • Please add four projective sketches/drawings (or montages/schemes) for your case and take the following aspects into account:
    • How would you like this case to change in the near future? (in 1-2 years)
    • And how could it look like in 10-15 years?

Summary and conclusion

Basically, I think it's very important to build solar systems not only in terms of financial profit and thereby don`t forget our environment. The most important question must be raised before starting, in which urban context should be located a plant? Following this, you should think about a well thought concept for the landscaping of such areas in order to achieve integration into nature. I would ask many questions about the location of the plant in Gänsdorf because if the park will be remaining steadfast on this point, it could arise an urban sprawl with growing of existing villages. In addition, this valuable farmland is no longer available.

In the year of 2009, there was a limitation of the planning areas, therefore, solar fields are planned only in a corridor of 110 m from highways or in addition, redevelopment areas may be overbuilt. Thus the natural scenery is affected only by an smaller degree.

At this time the EEG law will remunerate this solar fields for 20 years. Because of my skepticism of the correct location for this plant, we should think about a change of using this area. In 20 years we will have so many renewable energies that we should not give away this valuable farmland. The location offers itself excellent as a green park area, as a central point for recreation of people in cities around. The foundation for an architecturally valuable design has already been laid by the landscape architects Wartner & Zeitzler.
