Short Introduction to the Area of Study

Piata Unirii – The Union Square – is the oldest urban square in Timioara, quite large for its time compared to the built area of the fortress, about 260 meters square. It was built around the 1740’s, paved with natural stone and it’s been remodeled in the actual shape by arh. Serban Sturza between 1988 -1989. For centuries The Union Square became a place of religious events, military parades and other prestigious political and cultural events. Market fronts were occupied by some of the most important institutions of the city. The Union Square became a landmark for Timisoara due to its central location and baroc architecture, hosting various tourist attractions such as, The Roman Catholic Cathedral, the Baroque Palace, the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral, Bruck House, Holy Trinity Monument, the mineral water fountain etc.
