Rationale: Why is this case interesting?

Please give a short introduction to the site you have selected (not more than 150 words)

  • Why did you select it?
  • Is it exemplary for a specific theme or a problem?
  • In how far does it relate to your life?

The Brühlgutpark is located next to a former industrial zone which is in flux to change into a living area with many apartments in the old factory buildings. Between this Industrial zone and the park there is a main street that is highly frequented on the opposite side is a residential car home for elderly. Because of this situation there are many different social groups that are entitled to the Brühlgutpark. I really like the concept (it's kind of a circle out of concrete with different heights where you can sit for example)and how it already brings together different people. Furthermore it is important as a green space in the city. Looking back it has always been such a green space. As a garden city Winterthur used to have many old villa gardens with a huge variety of plants and beautiful old trees. This park used to be one of these villa gardens. But today representation should not be the only function of a park. Ecology gains in importance more and more and in my opinion there is a high potential for a more ecological planting design also because the present usage of shrubs causes high costs.

Author's perspective

From which professional background/perspective are your documenting this case?

I am studying landscape architecture in my final year at Switzerland. Plants and planting design are one of my favorite topics but I am also very interested in ecology. In my opinion there is a huge potential in combining planting design and ecology a good deal more especially in the cities.

Landscape and/or urban context of your case

The Brühlgutpark is not too far from the main station and there is a bus station juts next to it. A rolling band borders a big meadow and some of the trees are already 150 years old. They are one of the primary elements that hold the change from old to new together. In the background the sight is open to the old industrial front of the buildings that used to be factories which are contemporary witnesses of the industrial past of Winterthur. This park is not a huge open green space compared to other parks but never the less it is a high quality comfort space for people with every social background. It is a "Generation Park" there is space for children (playground) as there is for elderly people (direct connection to the Brühlgut home for old people). The park is quite popular and often visited. The park was developed out of a ancient villa garden like many other public spaces in Winterthur. 2010 the Brühlgutpark was redesigned from the local landscape architects from Rotzler Krebs Partner.

Analytical drawings

Please add four analytical sketches/drawings (or montages/schemes) of your case and take the following aspects into account:

  • natural dynamic versus cultural framework - in how far do these two forces come together in your case?
  • dynamic through the year (you may imagine how the site looks in spring and summer, maybe you also remember it)
  • highlight potentials and problems

Projective drawings

  • Please add four projective sketches/drawings (or montages/schemes) for your case and take the following aspects into account:
    • How would you like this case to change in the near future? (in 1-2 years)
    • And how could it look like in 10-15 years?

Summary and conclusion

Please summarize your case and give arguments for your projective design (approx 150 words).

You may add a series of images/photos in addition to the sketches/drawings
