Short Introduction to the Area of Study

Exercise 1: Sketching the Landscape

Time frame: October 25 - November 15, 2011

Exercise 2: Landscape Layers


(You see the Blue Zone on the map) There is a historical mosque which was restored. And the area surrounded by old houses. Most of those houses very old and ruined and near to the campus. Therefore, Those Houses demolished around mosque and created an open green space between campus- mosque- old town and highway.

(You see the Green Zone on the map) Turkish famous poet Mehmet Akif Ersoy’s house converted into the museum by ministry of culture and tourism. And Akif wrote national anthem for Turkish Republic.

(You see the Red Zone on the map) As you can see the old structure before restoration this area was used as residential area. And this area had the lowest income level in the city.The aim of the restoration was to create more valuable area for the inhabitants.

This area is now Quite attractive one especially for the students, tourists and for the people who are living in the different parts of Ankara.

When we ask Business( café restaurant etc. ) owners the restoration process how effect you and your business. They answered us: this restoration process increased sales.

Exercise 3: Behaviour Patterns

Time frame: December 6 - 20, 2011

  • How do people behave in this area? How do they use the space? What is important for them?
  • Observation of study area, interviews with local people and mapping of use patterns.
  • Preparation of short presentation

Exercise 4: Communication Concepts

Time frame: December 19, 2011 - January 17, 2012

  • Based on the different landscape assessment approaches students will develop a communication concept for their area of study
  • Which measures would be necessary for enhancing the awareness for the area?
  • Students are free to choose their method.
