Rose hips are a delight for wildlife, as well as for the eyes since there's not much color in the winter months. They are a treat for fruit loving birds, squirrels, deer and rabbits and can also be used in different recipes. Considering the size of the hips I'd assume it's a variety of Rosa rugosa.
