Rationale: Why is this case interesting?

The area that I have chosen is situated 2 km away from the center of the city. It has the potetial to become a rain garden or a different green infrastructure. The green space is situated at the base of a hill, beetwen two downhill streets and a bulding block. The space was left at the hand of destiny, the plants (wine, lime tree, apple tree, sweet mock-orange etc) that I found here are a little bit wild because of poor mentenance. I think this green area can collect a part of the water that flows down the streets and in the same time the sidewalk will not be muddy. Not many people can have acces to this space, even though it is public area, a part of the space is a slope that changes form every year and this represents one of the resons why after a rain their is mud on the sidewalk. I think that this green space is special because it has the potential to become a node beetwen other green spaces in the area.

Author's perspective

what is your professional/educational background and your relation to the site? I am a landscape engineer and every day when I go to the university I see this green space and it looks like it is suffering. The biggest problem comes when it rains because if you step on the street your shoes will get wet, it is like we have a little spring on the street.

Landscape and/or urban context of your case

  • Biogeography, cultural features, overall character, history and dynamics
  • Here are some photos of the area

As you can see it is not a beautiful sight, but many people walk beside it every day and it has the potential to become something great.

Green Infrastructure benefits for this site

Look again at the multiple benefits of green infrastructure - what could be achieved in your site and which are most relevant?

In the site that I have chosen the moust relvant benefits are :

1. Cleaner air
2. A lower temperature due to the green infrastucture
3. A bigger real estate value
4. Cleaner water released in the atmosphere
5. A meeting spot for building inhabitants.

Potential for multifunctionality

Green infrastructure has typically multiple functions. What could be achieved for your site in this respect?

The functions that I can achieve in my site are :

A. Socialization function - a place where people can meet and talk

B. Sanitary function - clean air, less pollution; fonic buffer- less noise for the builindg inhabitants

C. A link between different green ares in the neighborhood - a green node

D. Aestetic function - raised real estate value

Projective drawings

  • How would you like this case to change in the near future? (in 1-2 years)
    • I the future I hope this area will be green, so everyone who passes by has a better day after they see it. I hope their will be more wild life (different birds, insects and other animals), because of the fact that this green space will become a node for other green areas around.
  • And how could it look like in 10-15 years?
    • In 10 years the plants that I will be capable to withstand a big rain and in the same time they will cool the atmosphere and reduce pollution. This green space may also bring more people together.

Summary and conclusion

  • The city of Iasi is one of the greenest cities in Romania, but sadly there are many green spaces like the one that I have presented, that need our help. This space will become an interest point in the area and a pleasing site for pedestrians on their way to work or on their walks but, most important, their will be no mud or water on the street and the sidewalk. Places for socialization where created and all the species (Juniperus virginiana,Cercis canadensis,Ulmus sp., Betula nigra, Magnolia virginiana,Hamamelis virginiana, Viburnum opulus, Cornus racemosa, Hydrangea sp., Hibiscus syriacus, Spirea tomentosa, Philadelphus sp.) that were proposed are suitable for a rain garden in our climatic conditions. In time if more GI will appear in the city, then, maybe, we will live in a cleaner, cooler and greener place.
