Rationale: Why is this case interesting?

The Bulgaria industrial neighborhood is located in Cluj-Napoca city, Romania. The District was elevated in the late 60’s during the Romanian communist regime – time when the city was expanding and developing areas for industrialization. Therefore it was established in the eastern part of the city, between the railroad and the river Somes. Predominantly industrial area, here were located many factories and corporate headquarters. After the fall of the communist regime, a lot of the factories were given to privatization thus most of them came inoperable or sold on pieces. Nowadays the area is in a dilapidated state with abandoned factories, warehouses full of dump and sad dusty streets without much vegetation. Moreover the residents who received in the region plots for houses or flats in apartment buildings today can not enjoy a high quality of life. Dirty air, lack of vegetation, the few green spaces that are not connected to each other gives very few opportunities to spend time in the area of residence. I believe that with an adequate, professional approach the Bulgaria district can become a pleasant neighborhood that in the future would offer a more friendly location for it’s future residents weather they are companies or simple inhabitants

Author's perspective

After 4 years of studies in the Horticultural Faculty of University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, in 2012 I obtained my license as a landscape engineer. Since then I am working as a landscape engineer in an austrian company and among with a dedicate crew we build green roofs all over Romania. Since I am not native to the Cluj-Napoca city (I was born and lived half of my life in Republic of Moldova) I wasn’t so familiar with it’s districts. However, recently with the company we had to move to a bigger office building and the chosen area for that was Bulgaria district. It was then when I realized how poor in opportunities the district is. More then that, it was a real untoward for me to move from a green residential area to an industrial one with few vegetation and even fewer connections to the rest of the city.
