Rationale: Why is this case interesting?

Bogota has suffered the consequences of the mismanagement of natural resources and the wrong occupation of the territory, creating a social and economic impact in the city.

There is a need to recover the water elements, aware of the importance of contributing to the reduction of the ecological footprint, global overheating, greenhouse effect, pollution and other factors that are affecting the planet.

The Fucha River because of its location and its potential in the urban dynamics of the territory, becomes an opportunity to be developed as an ecological corridor, it would help to improve the urban landscape, environmental quality and to connect through a green space the city from East to West

The river is so important that it has to be recovered not only for the inhabitants of the surrounding area but for the entire city, because it has the opportunity to become a big lineal park that could be used by all the population near the river.

Finally, protect the water reserves of our city is an action that all governments and communities must do to ensure that these natural resources could last not only for human beings but for all forms of life in the planet.

Author's perspective

I am an architect of the Andes University, that studied a Master in Urbanism and a Postgraduate in Landscape and Environmental Planning at the University of La Plata in Argentina. I work now for the Capital District of Bogota in the Secretariat of Urban Planning at the Public Space Workshop. For these government and our mayor there is a great interest in saving the rivers and wetland, an these can be an important proyect, because of its the great impact in the city.

Landscape and/or urban context of your case

  • Biogeography,

The Fucha River is located in Bogotá, Capital District of Colombia which is the largest city of Colombia and one of the biggest of South America, with a population of 7.67 million people and an area of 612.74 sq miles (1,587 km²). It´s geographical site is actually a high plateau in the Andes Mountains, 2.640 meters over the sea level, popularly called Savannah of Bogotá. It has a subtropical highland climate, with an average temperature of 14.5 °C (58 °F), and it varies from 6 to 19 °C (43 to 66 °F). It has a high level of rain falls, dry and rainy seasons alternate throughout the year, the rainiest moths are april, may, september, octuber and november

Bogota city, it is formed by a hydrographic system composed by watersheds of the rivers Salitre, Fucha, Tunjuelo, Teusaca, Molinos most of them channelized and a lot of wetlands dried for building purposes like Torca-Guaymaral, La Conejera, and Jaboque. This hydrographic system drains more than 80% of the urbanized area, and all the water goes directly to Bogota River. The biggest problem is that most of the rivers are polluted due to the expansion of the city, and thasts why they are abandoned.
