Rationale: Why is this case interesting?

I have chosen Vacaresti Lake Site because it represents an enormous urban and natural surface situated in the center of Bucharest city. Moreover, it represents an outstanding example of an urban system coexisting with an ecological system formed by wildlife nature and creatures. For more than 20 years, this particular site has been neglected by the public authorities. Being underdeveloped and neglected, Vacaresti Lake has its own way of development by being conquered by nature. As a result, it hosts nowadays a great diversity of vegetation and some creatures like herons, egrets, cormorants, gulls, swans, coots, mallards, water snakes, newts, fox and muskrat, which survive in a stable ecosystem.

Author's perspective

In my opinion, this site has a great green infrastucture potential, not only because of its position inside the urban system, but also because it already has a connection with Dambovita river and it has the opportunity to be connected with Colentina Lake by converting the existing gray infrastructure into a green one.

Landscape and/or urban context of your case

Vacaresti Lake is a man-made lake situated in the central-southern part of Bucharest, near Dambovita Lake, measuring an area of 189 ha. Vacaresti Lake was designed as part of a complex development of Dambovita River, which should have been part of the hydrological system of Bucharest flood defense. This site is also known as the Bucharest urban Delta, because of its similarities to a common delta climate. It gathers 90 species of birds (some of them being protected animals in Europe), which form an entire ecosystem. They migrated here because of the food resources they found and the specific natural habitat, which gives this site a great ecological potential of development.

Green Infrastructure benefits for this site

Developing a green infrastructure strategy for Bucharest, Vacaresti Lake could be part of a green system which can offer a lot of benefits to the city. For instance, the building pressure (housing, transport, ) which is given to the land can be easily avoided by enhancing the current use of the land (natural surface) and encouraging nature protection and conservation. The green infrastructure could also generate social benefits (health and recreation by providing clean and healthy environment and places for recreation), environmental benefits (enhance biodiversity by creating wetlands habitats and sustaining the existing ones, improving ecosystems functions and encouraging water management) and economical benefits (by encouraging the development of this site as a touristical one).

Potential for multifunctionality

Green infrastructure multifunctionality lays on the fact that it has the ability to provide both several functions and benefits on the same spatial area (in this case, a pretty wide area). It also has the opportunity to be planned and designed in a sustainable way wth includes the provision for natural features and ecosystem services. Furthermore, it can also increase the quality of the urban life and reduce the air and water pollution, reduce urban heat island effects and increase the biodiversity.
