Short Introduction to the Area of Study

Grymön is located on the island of Händelö approximately 5km from the centre of Norrköping. The landscape of Grymön is characterized by summerhouses and auxiliary structures set within woodland with many of the properties looking out across the river Motala. The area is approached from the city by road in less than 10 minutes and the distance to the E4 motorway is a similar distance, making Grymön a very accessible location for dwellers of Norrköping.

The summer house area contrast starkly with the rest of the island which is heavily influenced by heavy industry; logistic depots, ethanol production and an oil terminal.

The choice of this area is partly due to its inclusion in a larger project aimed at gaining an understanding of people’s perceptions of ‘their’ landscape. Grymön provides a site for addressing people’s everyday landscape, albeit predominantly seasonal, and also a landscape in which they are instrumental in creating, developing and managing
