Located in the bed of river Emajõgi (Mother River) the town has it’s specific characteristics – river, hills surrounding it and lowlands around. Due to history, culture and developing ideas Tartu can be called ‘Town Interlaced with Nature’.
Three most significant aspects chosen by our group are: Emajõgi with surrounding green belt, Toomemägi with views and park, and nature areas around the city.
Emajõgi is probably the first thing noticed in Tartu. It divides city into two parts with several bridges connecting. Historically the river has been important trade route, but nowadays this function has ceased. The green belt, surrounding the river is the result of WW II and city council policy after the war was that instead of restoring houses, parks were created. Nowadays the parks surrounding the river are widely used for recreation and past-time activities, festivals and happenings are held on the river and spring floods make it the centre of city life in its own way.

Nature areas around the town are the third aspects of landscape in Tartu. Even though the areas tend to be out of the town’s official borders, they are widely used in everyday life. The size of the town makes it possible to access its surroundings easily and fast, people are used to take short, almost everyday trips out of town to countryside. ‘Nature’ can be accessed in maximum 15 minutes drive or walk, so if we call Tartu ‘Town Interlaced with Nature’, we have to add its surroundings to the city and parks inside it.
