Description

HISTORY OF THE WUR In 1918 the agriculture academy was placed in Wageningen. They chose Wageningen because this is a place where different landscapes come together. In 1986 it became a university and had several buildings on different places in the city of Wageningen.

In 2005 the university of Wageningen is moving to a new place just outside the city. The place where the new buildings are now situated, was first in agricultural use. It was very flat and had a lot of ditches for the drainage of the water. Designers placed a lot of large grass in the site. Although they are coming from the history of farm land, it’s too large to afford function for students in present days. However its large spaces afford a variety of future developments.

Wageningen UR is famous for the life science. Most majors here are focusing on the harmony in nature and artificial areas. The landscape pursuits the harmonization and sustainability in mind. (1)

HARMONIZATION AND SUSTAINABILITY Besides large patches of grass, there are several ecological gardens. One of them is the garden behind Lumen which holds nutrient-poor vegetation in which Orchids and bats find a suitable home. The ponds and shrubs also provide shelter for birds. (2) Another one is the Dassenbos on the western border of the campus. It is more like the classical nature park with natural styled plantations and curved sanded paths. Plantations here have a wide range of species which provide a good habitat for birds and mammals . Magpies and pigeons are abundant in winters. Occasionally the great spotted woodpecker and the common kingfisher are spotted. (3) Besides the outdoor spaces the interior spaces also are full of nature. The designer intended to get the outside space and inside one more blur in order to get closer the distance between nature and human beings.

This place is situated between the low Binnenveld (agricultural land on peat) and the high Veluwe (forest on a moraine), so the water of the Veluwe flows underneath the ground and come to the surface at this spot. This water is one of the problems the new campus is dealing with. There is water flowing into basements, the open grass court is most times to wet to walk on, there is erosion in the few ditches and the bicycle paths are sometimes flooded with water.

FUNCTIONS This landscape here is good for look. The large block of buildings need such a big space to make it like a castle. But it’s not a site for royalty it should be a place for students who need several human-scale spaces with functional facility. Maybe we can make several human-scale places in the large space with spotted brushes and functional facility.
