			Yo conocí la geografía de mi terruño por aquel yuyero viejo.
			En su canasta estaban todos los pagos, con su perfume agraz y dulce.
			Con cada yuyo venía un pedazo de geografía viva. pues el yuyero al exaltar las virtudes de la planta evocaba el paisaje, los animales y los hombres...
			Algunos yuyos desaparecían por algún tiempo como seres vivos.
			Solamente las lluvias pertinaces, esas que levantaban de las cuevas los hongos dorados, conseguían que esta o aquella planta surgiera de la tierra. El yuyero las acechaba con la misma avidez que un pajarero acechaba a un pájaro raro.

			Otras aparecían, tras un golpe de lluvia de gotas como copas de freno, en las sequías largas que calcinaban los pastos. Nacían y morían con el chaparrón.
			La sierra venía con sus mil plantas llenas de espinas.
			El valle dormía en la canasta con sus gramillas duras.
			La cañada infantil, puro salto y espuma, con su menta espesa.
			Los cerros grises y transparentes de mi pago estaban mostrando allí el cabello gris y azufrado de la marcela y la planta de la yerba blanca.

	En Uruguay, desde nuestra infancia, nos han enseñado que el relieve de nuestro país se caracteriza por su escasa altitud, con dos grandes áreas estructurales: las penillanuras y las llanuras, que le confieren un carácter suavemente ondulado, marcando de esta manera, nuestra noción de paisaje como escenario, aparentemente monótono. Nada más alejado de la realidad sin embargo, pues si bien no existen accidentes extemos como montañas, la riqueza de matices caracteriza nuestro territorio.
