*''Plitvice lakes national park is located in the Republic of Croatia and it is the Croatian oldest and largest national park, having that status since 1949. It is located in a mountainous karst region with a surface of just under 300 square kilometers in size. Primarily covered in forest vegetation with some smaller grassland areas and 16 larger and several smaller cascading lakes connected by waterfalls, which are its key feature. The unique characteristic of Plitvice lakes is the biodynamic process of sedimentary tufa rocks formation and consequentially tufa (travertine) barriers which resulted in the creation of the characteristic lakes and waterfalls. This would be the outstanding value of the location which led to its international recognition and its declaration as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. Entirely opposite to that the smaller areas concentrated in the vicinity of the larger lakes in Plitvice is a major touristic attraction containing recreational and touristic infrastructure as well as some settlements of cultural importance portraying the traditional way of life as part of the national park’s cultural heritage. These areas require high and active maintenance efforts in order to preserve them as they are and to limit the human influence from high touristic pressure to the relatively small location which needs to remain unaltered as much as it is possible. This constant conflict is what needs to be regularly dealt with as the lack of maintenance or proper planning efforts would have devastating consequences on this landscape.''

== Which challenges is this landscape facing?==
*''Plitvice lakes National Park faces a lot of problems which have started to be publicly revealed over the past years and which may cause it to be categorized as an endangered UNESCO world heritage site, or, if there isn´t going to be a significant improvement, even removed from the list. One of the problems is the overcrowding in the Park caused by its increased popularity and mass tourism. Recently there has been over one and a half million tourists per year and sometimes even more then 15 000 visitors daily during the peak touristic season. Such a high touristic pressure has already caused some devastation as the visitors act with neglect to the ecosystems, not following the designated path for movement and entering closed areas, damaging the flora, leaving trash or feeding fish and other animals, which is forbidden. Secondly there has been a rapid increase in apartmanization as the number of built apartments for rental in the Park has almost doubled over the past 10 years and a large number of new building permits have been granted, even for building in the protected areas of the Park, also there has been news of a possibility of new hotels being built in the future. The most pressing matter in Plitvice Lakes would be the pollution in the Park, which has already been detected in the waters, caused by non-existence of a sufficient sewer system and wastewater purification as the wastewater from the apartments and some residential houses is being released directly into the environment, which causes not only the pollution of waters but it also directly effects the process of tufa barrier formation by killing the microorganism which are essential for its creation. Another serious risk for pollution is from the traffic, especially the transportation of oil and fuel, on the major state road that passed through Plitvice Lakes water catchment area. Finally, as there is no alternative clean water source, the potable water for the settlements in the Park is currently being drained from the largest Kozjak lake and some water streams which, unless dealt with, will lead to their drainage and the drainage of the waterfalls in the Park.''

== What would be your strategy for improvement?==
*''In order to trigger a positive change in this environment various steps and measures need to be undertaken, of which some are quite urgent. The number of visitors in the Park has to be restricted to the amount that would be more easily controlled and monitored in order to ensure that they do not damage the sensitive ecosystems of the park, also their movement should be more strictly directed away from these sensitive areas. The uncontrolled apartmanization needs to be stopped and the building of the new touristic capacities should be concentrated in the settlements outside of the Park boundaries, while providing a good transport connection to the Park. Furthermore, one of the most urgent measures would be to provide sufficient infrastructure for the already built settlements, both in ways of a new sewage system and water purification stations, as well as an outer source of clean potable water. Lastly, it is important to redirect the traffic from the district road in the Park by building a new road away from the Parks water catchment area to avoid any possible pollution from transportation.''

Although cititzens were involved in the project and formed interest groups no public particiation took place in the actual planning phase, which kept the actual participation level to a minimum. So although one may say that the public was formally involved the actual input was kept low.

In 2008 the City of Vienna launched an (invited) competition for the redevelopment of the former Eisingr Süd Area. the area used to be a sports area in a densly built environment in Viennas 10 district. The sports consisted of a skating area and tennis and sports sites. Most parts were already close, only the skating part was still open and in function.
the aim of the redevopment was to keep a (smaller) sports area and to add a housing area and a small shopping mall.
The competition was won by Hermann & Valentiny und Partner with Architekt Podsedensek ZT GmbH and landscape architect Jakob Fina.

Public aparticipation took place in the form of a survey among citizens living nearby. An information evening was held and an exhibition of the winner project was organised to inform the public

The major decisions were all done b< the city of Vienna employes, first by an invited competition, then by only formal but no real public participation. Then the winner project was chnged and the sports sites were reduced compared to enlarge the housing area and shopping mall.
This finally lead to protests among citizens and the formation of a neighbourhood initiative against the project

==Why is this case relevant?==

Jarn Mound is a 50ft high viewpoint (Oxford Preservation Trust, 2016) in Boars Hill, approximately 3 miles from Oxford. The viewpoint was built by Sir Arthur Evans in 1932 (Oxford Preservation Trust, 2016), to allow people to take in the famous view of Oxford and the Berkshire and Wiltshire Downs (Oxford Preservation Trust, 2016). At the top of the mound, there is a plinth with a map of the local area, to allow visitors to locate what they are looking at. The adjoining Jarn Wild Garden contains many different soil types to support a plethora of different British plant species; which Sir Arthur Evans also made open to the public. Sir Arthur Evans was a resident of Boars Hill, and he wanted to preserve the beauty and views of the area (Oxford Preservation Trust, 2016). As a resident of Boars Hill myself, I find this area extremely special and unusual. It is a small piece of Boars Hill's history, and is situated at the heart of the settlement.

==Which idea of ‘design with nature’ guides the design concept of this site?==

The site was designed and created by Sir Arthur Evans, who's main aims were to preserve the beauty of the area and provide views out to Oxford. The site is owned by the charity 'The Oxford Preservation Trust', which provide some annual maintenance (Oxford Preservation Trust, 2016). However there is also a local volunteer group, 'Abingdon Green Gym' who provide maintenance on a more regular basis. This group undertake tasks such as clearing dead vegetation and cutting back scrub (Abingdon Green Gym, Unknown). Around 30 years ago the Wild Garden was adapted to make it easier to maintain, however there are currently plans to restore the Wild Garden in the near future (Oxford Preservation Trust, 2016).

== Which challenges is this landscape facing?==

Since 1932 a large number of trees and other vegetation have grown tall enough to block the view to Oxford from the top of the mound. There are now less visitors to the garden because of this, and this has resulted in less of a reason to maintain the garden to a high standard. The charity 'The Oxford Preservation Trust', that own the garden, also own a number more landscapes around the county; some of which have high visitor numbers. Maintenance budgets are more likely to be spent on these other landscapes, sometimes leaving Jarn Mound and Wild Garden without maintenance for a prolonged period of time. The mound itself has steps running up one side, however these are uneven and extremely steep, limiting accessibility to visitors and providing a health and safety issue. The plinth at the top of the mound once had a map of the local area and the views that could be seen from the this point, however it was often stolen as it was only glued down, and has not been recovered since the most recent incident.

If the views could be regained through thinning of the vegetation, the mound could once again become a popular destination for tourists and other visitors. Although the local community does not rely on the garden for any income, it would be appreciated if more time was spent maintaining the space. There are currently a few community events held in the garden each year, such as carol singing and charity bake sales. Due to the large number of benches situated around the garden, there is potential for it to be used for more events and gatherings. If the local residents care more about the Garden then it is more likely that maintenance will be performed timely.

== What would be your strategy for improvement?==

The garden could be improved first by reopening the view to Oxford. This would involve thinning the vegetation that has grown to block the famous views. The steps leading up the side of the mound are currently uneven and steep, they provide a hazard to visitors and limit accessibility. By replacing or repairing the steps more visitors would be able to reach the top of the mound and there would be less chance for accidents. More community events could be held in the garden throughout the year. Currently a few gatherings meet in the garden, however if more people used the space then more locals will become aware of the garden and it is more likely to be maintained. Information boards positioned around the garden would allow visitors to educate themselves on the history, vegetation and biodiversity of the garden. Local schools could use it as a resource in their teaching. Although replacing the map on the plinth at the top of the mound would be beneficial, it would be better to update the map and fix it to the plinth with screws rather than glue, so there is a lesser chance of it being stolen. Overall, the garden would majorly benefit from a regular maintenance routine, as this would increase visitor numbers and ensure that it does not fall into disrepair.

==Why is this case relevant?==

The Valley of Massarelos was an important place of fixation of the populations in the ancient city of Porto and a focus of development.

The presence of water allowed the fertility of the land and the existence of mills. This made it possible the settlement of the population and gave rise to a ensemble of narrow alleys and agricultural fields laid on agriculture, milling and fishing.

Due to the privileged position of the place, in their sunny slopes facing west, were installed big houses of wealthy families of Porto with their terraced beautiful gardens.

Subsequently, large factories were installed, resulting today in an important industrial archeology site.

With the cultural changes that occurred in the city due to the industrialization, centralization and use of the automobile, the place went into stagnation and degradation. Due to its identity characteristics, the place wasn't able to adapt to the growth and the new demands of the population.

In nowadays, this Heritage Landscapes is threatened by the forgetfulness and abandonment by the Man and the Culture that throughout the times has shaped it and continues to shape!

==Which idea of ‘design with nature’ guides the design concept of this site?==
The design concept of this site was created by the same process that reflects the landscape concept: Man + Nature!
According to Caldeira Cabral (Great Master of Landscape Architecture in Portugal), the landscape is the "set of conditions of existence of the biocenosis of which man is a part". In this way, the landscape evolves with the needs of man and this relation of biocenosis.
It was in this relationship that the Vale de Massarelos developed.
Man has always sought land for agriculture, better than this, was if this land have a motive power, like a water course, which due their topography allow the installation of mills to milling cereals produced locally and make bread. The Valley of Massarelos had all this!
The heritage landscape of Massarelos Valley, has being shaped based in this logic process.
The apparent abandonment and lack of interest that seems manifested in nowadays in relation to this place, continues to result from the Cultural interaction of Man and is place.
It result of general people perception that today, the everyday experiences, don't coexist with the potentialities of the local.
For that reason, this a completely cultural place, which depends on human interaction and maintenance.
If it falls into oblivion, and isn't maintained, the degradation will be accentuate which will possible lead to total loss of the existing heritage. In fact, this has already been observed in respect to the ruins of mills that have now disappeared almost entirely.

== Which challenges is this landscape facing?==
The most negative impact is the danger of forgetting and abandonment that can go in to degradation of the area and the hazards associated with it. These dangers are of cultural, landscape and for the population residing or using the space.
This negative impact is reflected in the direct loss of patrimony such as the construction on terraces, mills, etc; The permanent loss / modification of the identity of the site; The loss of intangible heritage associated with the resident population ("bairrismo", popular festivals, religious festivals, ...); among others.
In order to counteract these facts, could be taken actions to recover the landscape and cultural heritage of the area that could involve the resident population in order to activate the sense of belonging and protection by the people in relation to the territory. Apart from this it, the heritage área could be integrated in touristic routes of the city being diffused and giving known their potential and thus give the motto to its regeneration.
Since the Port is "in fashion" and there is a great afluence of tourism in to the city, its well thinking the creation of a tourist office / interpretive center in the interior of the area to give to know the uses and traditions associated with place and its importance in the "Old Oport".
The housings that don't supplie the needs of the local population that because of the dificult of access, don't could be integrated on the daily life, could be reused to the tourism or trade associated with it, as a external form of activation of the territory.

== What would be your strategy for improvement?==

The main idea is the "activation of territory".
That is, to reestablish the connection of people to the territory and its appropriation. Because it is necessary have the knowlegement about the subject to people want protect it.
Firstly, it is necessary to alert and give knowledge about the existing patrimony, and for this it is important to reach as many people as possible. The Internet his is a mean of disseminating information very quickly and because of that, very useful to this aim.
So it could be done using an interactive website with the present values of the place (historical, landscape, patrimonial and cultural values) and which could functions as a local repository of information about the place where everyone could share information.
Other public target and able to diffúance information, is the student public. It would be interesting to carry out actions in schools where pupils could contribute to the recovery and activation of the territory, developing actions in which they themselves would paint and restore elements in the place (walls, facades, mills, ....).
The population itself must be “reconnected” with the space, with the development in collaboration with the cultural associations and of dwellers, in order to revive traditions and not let the intangible heritage and of memory of the place die.
In the territory, could be "activator points of the territory" where people would be invited to make their contribution to the register of the heritage.
As for example, in specific points, such are the views over the surroundings or over patrimonial elements, invite the people to take a photo of the present moment and share, through a Qr-code, their reconstitution of a old photo of the place currently.

The history of landscape design is a reflection of the history of humankind's interpretations of nature. Gardens can be considered as a spatial interpretation of the relationship of man and nature. Embedded in a cultural context, with its specific beliefs, values and knowledge, design with nature is always a product of the time during which it has evolved. Gardens and parks are living monuments providing evidence of what a society considered as an ideal place, a space for relaxation, a place for sports, somewhere for strolling or even an earthly representation of paradise. But the ideas behind them are also subject to constant change, oscillating between the taming of nature and the desire for wilderness and natural process. What has been valued in the past might not be valued any more in the present.

In this seminar we want to reflect on landscape heritage from two perspectives, both being closely intertwined: First, the context of design with nature and the way in which it is influenced by a particular epoch, its geography, its religion, values and ideas of power. And second, the challenge of our present day when dealing with this living heritage: which interpretation of nature is worth preserving for the future? How to deal with overlapping design concepts that have evolved over various periods? Which design approaches are needed? And what is the role of landscape architects in this context? The seminar lectures will combine introductions to specific design periods with good practice examples of garden and park conservation. We will also reflect on the challenges of this specific field of work in various European countries.

== Format and Target Audience ==
This seminar will be delivered as a series of synchronous online meetings on behalf of the [http://www.le-notre.org LE:NOTRE Institute] in cooperation with landscape architecture programmes at various universities. The seminar can be followed in conjunction with existing courses in garden history and conservation or be offered as a self-standing course introducing relevant themes of landscape heritage and conservation. Although the primary target groups are landscape architecture students and professionals from across Europe and beyond, this seminar is dedicated to all students and scholars interested in the subject of garden history.
