== Landscape and/or urban context of your case ==
The association of the words „planting design“, for most people in Croatia, are within urban places. For example: parks, playgrounds, green open spaces in general. The aim of these places is to provide a better quality of life for the people living in cities. But what about the people who are living in villages?

However, without a rural- there wouldn’t be an urban context. They're in a reciprocal relationship. Building a designed green area in an urban setting has a counter impact on a rural one and vice versa. Residential areas tend to be developed around these causing a migration from rural areas to cities and as a result these become overcrowded, overpriced, too powerful and centralistic while at the same time villages are being left behind and emptied an the relationship between urban a rural becomes bipolar.

A solution to this problem could be to increase the focus on rural places so they become an attractive place to live at. The attention has to be directed towards the compliance of the design and the natural, cultural and historical features of the region. The immigration of people would lead to a better represented land use which would make the culture and the spirit of these places alive again as well as improve the economic situation. The fertile dolines and valleys as one of the characteristic geographical features of this region would become agricultural land again which fits into the cultural and historical features of this region, too. Metaphorically, it means, that the landscape, nature, culture and the interests of people build a little organism.

This concept could be used in every kind of village according to the natural, cultural and historical features of it. In time the gap between cities and villages would become smaller while the balance of lifestyle would become better (in cities as well as in villages), and last but not least, the „wild construction“ in the cities would slow down and decrease, so cities would become relieved and the people living there would have a higher quality of life.

== What are the objectives of your design? ==

Landscape architecture is a profession focused on the well-being of the people, the philosophy of this case is: improvement of quality of life of people living in cities by improving quality of life of people living in villages. People living in villages live surrounded by nature but they do not necessarily experience it. A lot of green does not make to a better quality of life nor diminishes the need of landscape design in them. Adriana Papic, part of our group lived in such a village as a child and describes it as a place “with empty houses, one street and two directions, no safety for children and no center for social contact, no paths through that nature, you could see it but could not experience it”.

That idea should be an avocation to think about it, in general, to think about other ways, other solutions for the problem of today.

== Summary of the collaborative process ==
As a Landscape Architect the fundamental objective for development of Stajnica area is by ensuring improvement in overall rural community conditions, economic, quality of life considerations such as the environment, health, infrastructure, housing and the preservation of natural and cultural heritage.

Measures for the development of Stajnica encompass aid for:
• Investments into farms
• processing of agricultural products,
• Young farmers,
• Education, retraining and training,
• Environmental protection measures in agricultural and forestry areas,
• Forestry,
• Land improvement measures,
• Reconstruction and development of the countryside,
• Preservation of cultural property, rural customs and manifestations,
• Various agricultural and other activities aimed at realising additional or alternative sources of income,
• Rural and hunting tourism and traditional crafts,
• Improvement of rural infrastructure connected with the development of agriculture,
• Promotion of Fine roads and other tourist routes,
• Development of services in rural areas.

Based on this project we have identified 3 main purpose of planting design: Functional, Ecological and Aesthetic. The extent to which our design serves these purposes can be used to judge the success of the project. Different planting design will have different priorities and these should be reflected in the attention given to meeting the functional, ecological and aesthetic requirements.

The association of the words „planting design“, for most people in Croatia, are within urban places. For example: parks, playgrounds, green open spaces in general. The aim of these places is to provide a better quality of life for the people living in cities. But what about the people who are living in villages?

However, without a rural- there wouldn’t be an urban context. They're in a reciprocal relationship. Building a designed green area in an urban setting has a counter impact on a rural one and vice versa. Residential areas tend to be developed around these causing a migration from rural areas to cities and as a result these become overcrowded, overpriced, too powerful and centralistic while at the same time villages are being left behind and emptied an the relationship between urban a rural becomes bipolar.

A solution to this problem could be to increase the focus on rural places so they become an attractive place to live at. The attention has to be directed towards the compliance of the design and the natural, cultural and historical features of the region. The immigration of people would lead to a better represented land use which would make the culture and the spirit of these places alive again as well as improve the economic situation. The fertile dolines and valleys as one of the characteristic geographical features of this region would become agricultural land again which fits into the cultural and historical features of this region, too. Metaphorically, it means, that the landscape, nature, culture and the interests of people build a little organism.

This concept could be used in every kind of village according to the natural, cultural and historical features of it. In time the gap between cities and villages would become smaller while the balance of lifestyle would become better (in cities as well as in villages), and last but not least, the „wild construction“ in the cities would slow down and decrease, so cities would become relieved and the people living there would have a higher quality of life.

Landscape architecture is a profession focused on the well-being of the people, the philosophy of this case is: improvement of quality of life of people living in cities by improving quality of life of people living in villages. People living in villages live surrounded by nature but they do not necessarily experience it. A lot of green does not make to a better quality of life nor diminishes the need of landscape design in them. Adriana Papic, part of our group lived in such a village as a child and describes it as a place “with empty houses, one street and two directions, no safety for children and no center for social contact, no paths through that nature, you could see it but could not experience it”.

That idea should be an avocation to think about it, in general, to think about other ways, other solutions for the problem of today.

The association of the words „planting design“, for most people in Croatia, are within urban places. For example: parks, playgrounds, green open spaces in general. The aim of these places is to provide a better quality of life for the people living in cities. But what about the people who are living in villages?

However, without a rural- there wouldn’t be an urban context. They're in a reciprocal relationship. Building a designed green area in an urban setting has a counter impact on a rural one and vice versa. Residential areas tend to be developed around these causing a migration from rural areas to cities and as a result these become overcrowded, overpriced, too powerful and centralistic while at the same time villages are being left behind and emptied an the relationship between urban a rural becomes bipolar.

A solution to this problem could be to increase the focus on rural places so they become an attractive place to live at. The attention has to be directed towards the compliance of the design and the natural, cultural and historical features of the region. It’s a good design for the beach but you have to consider about the port. Creating a nice beach near a port that pollutes the water and makes noise could be problematic. You said it‘s a big problem that people are going to other places for a daytrip then the beach (and maybe swim) while they live 25m from the see away. Maybe it could work, for example, replacing the port or maybe changing the purpose of it? You have a challaging case!

Matthias:

Your case is very interesting. It’s a good basic for a project. We think that there is a need for some areas, places and structures for social conntact. The intervention isn’t that big and it
could become a wonderful and functional place that attracts people. Good job!

Martina:

You’v choosen the perfect example: „How should it be“. It’s a good “pattern” for those who comes from anather background than landscape architecture. It’s a good “theory becoming reality“ project.
The different background is interesting. Green, natural, harmony, well-being, people, social contact (…) all at one place, designed by people for people, that lasts for 140 years!! It‘s really hard to make a landscape project that lasts so long. It’s not like architecture, steel and concrete. The material of landscape architects are changes every year! We like your noticing to all the small details! And you’re right! By improving them, they would fulfill that place.
In general, I think, you made it very good!

A lot of green doesn't make the quality of life better so it doesn't mean that planting design isn't necessary in villages. As I was a child, I was living in a place like that and I know what the quality of life is in places like this. Old empty houses, one street and two directions, no safety for children and no center for social contact, no paths through the nature, you see it but you don't experience it.

That idea should be an avoccation to think about it, in general, to think about other ways, other sollutions for the problem of today.

== Landscape and/or urban context of your case ==
The association of the words „planting design“, for most people in Croatia, are urban places. For example: parks, playgrounds, in general green open spaces. The aim of these places is a better quality of life for people living in cities. But what about the people living in villages?

However, without a rural- there wouldn’t be an urban context. They're in a reciprocal relationship. By doing measures in urban places, the same measures become an impact on rural places and the same way back. That means, that urban places become preferred, overcrowded, overpriced, generally, too powerful and centralistic, while the relationship between urban and rural becomes bipolar.

The idea as a solution of this problem could be an increased focus to rural places like in the region Lika. By doing planting design in villages of Lika, the villages would become prepossessing for people and attract them to live there. The attention has to be directed towards the compliance of the design and the natural, cultural and historical features of the region. The imigration of people would lead to a better represented landuse which would make the culture and the spirit of these places alive again as well as improve the economic situation. The fertile dolines and valleys as one of the characteristic geographical features of this region would become agricultural land again which fits into the cultural and historical features of this region, too. Metaphorically, it means, that the landscape, nature, culture and the interests of people build a little organism.

This concept could be used in every kind of village according to the natural, cultural and historical features of it.
As time goes by, in future the gap between cities and villages would become smaller while the balance of lifestyle would become better (in cities as well as in villages), and last but not least, the „wild constuction“ in the cities would slow down and decrease, so cities would become relieved and the people living there would have a higher qualitiy of life.

People living in villages like that are living in nature but they don’t experience that nature. == Rationale: Why is this case interesting? ==

"‘’t Veld’ is with his 44ha the biggest green area in the green less region of Ardooie-Tielt. ‘t Veld’ is a nature reserve in the framework of the ‘Natura 2000 network’. The aim of the natura 2000 network is to assure the long-term survival of Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats.

This area is situated 6km from my home.

The name ‘’t Veld’ comes from field(in dutch: veld) areas or wastine areas, these are treeless areas with field ponds and fragments of thickets. The vegetation was dominated by Heath and Carex.

In the 18the century a rich family build there castle in that area and they gave the order to plant a deciduous forest.

On the picture you can see an open space between the forest and the agricultural area, it’s a typical open space at the border of the forest where u can find relicts of the original vegetation, a lot of animals take advantage of these open spaces like amphibians and roe deer’s. Nowadays it’s also a good habitat for a lot of flowering plants.

The provincial government has made a management plan for the preservation of the typical habitat types that you can find in ‘’t Veld’.

== Author's perspective ==
In juli I graduated in a bachelor program in landscape development, that’s a follow up program during 1 year that I followed after my bachelor’s degree in landscape and garden architecture, both in Gendt. The landscape development program followed a strong analytic approach of landscapes on different scale levels, from large to very large scales. In the framework of the projects there was an important approach of some themes, for example; history, GIS, planning policy, ecology, … The aim of the projects was to get to some important planning and design principles by assessing and evaluating due the project period.

In Flanders (the Dutch part of Belgium) we have, considering the european landscape, quite a unique landscape. There is a lot of fragmentation of the open/natural spaces and that’s the reason why planners and landscape architects in Flanders have to deal with the issue of the connection of the few remaining open/natural spaces by natural corridors and the intern expending of the urban areas.

I personally am very interested in the relicts of our historical landscape and that’s the reason why I’ve chosen for this case.

Like I’ve said, 't Veld is a isolated green area, an other area called ‘Sterrebos’ is also very valuable, it’s also an earlier field/wastine area.

The cultural influence is clearly perceivable through the time. The Castle and the avenues are visual perceivable, the excavation of the area by analyses of the maps and the ground of the site.

As you can see at the analytical drawings the case area is the only not excavated peace of the whole site ‘‘t veld’. It’s a heather temporary wetland where you can find relicts of the original plants like Potentilla erecta, some heather plants and a lot of Carex sorts. In a 20km circle you only can find some of these plants in the ‘Sterrebos’. The temporary wetland is a good habitat for a lot of amphibians, insects, …. Definitely with the presence of the field pond relicts in the area. Over the time the ponds had silted up, nowadays the relicts are nearly disappeared.

== Rationale: Why is this case interesting? ==

"‘’t Veld’ is with his 44ha the biggest green area in the green less region of Ardooie-Tielt. ‘t Veld’ is a nature reserve in the framework of the ‘Natura 2000 network’. The aim of the natura 2000 network is to assure the long-term survival of Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats.

This area is situated 6km from my home.

The name ‘’t Veld’ comes from field(in dutch: veld) areas or wastine areas, these are treeless areas with field ponds and fragments of thickets. The vegetation was dominated by Heath and Carex.

In the 18the century a rich family build there castle in that area and they gave the order to plant a deciduous forest.

On the picture you can see an open space between the forest and the agricultural area, it’s a typical open space at the border of the forest where u can find relicts of the original vegetation, a lot of animals take advantage of these open spaces like amphibians and roe deer’s. Nowadays it’s also a good habitat for a lot of flowering plants.

The provincial government has made a management plan for the preservation of the typical habitat types that you can find in ‘’t Veld’.

In juli I graduated in a bachelor program in landscape development, that’s a follow up program during 1 year that I followed after my bachelor’s degree in landscape and garden architecture, both in Gendt. The landscape development program followed a strong analytic approach of landscapes on different scale levels, from large to very large scales. In the framework of the projects there was an important approach of some themes, for example; history, GIS, planning policy, ecology, … The aim of the projects was to get to some important planning and design principles by assessing and evaluating due the project period.

In Flanders (the Dutch part of Belgium) we have, considering the european landscape, quite a unique landscape. There is a lot of fragmentation of the open/natural spaces and that’s the reason why planners and landscape architects in Flanders have to deal with the issue of the connection of the few remaining open/natural spaces by natural corridors and the intern expending of the urban areas.

Like I’ve said, 't Veld is a isolated green area, an other area called ‘Sterrebos’ is also very valuable, it’s also an earlier field/wastine area.

The cultural influence is clearly perceivable through the time. The Castle and the avenues are visual perceivable, the excavation of the area by analyses of the maps and the ground of the site.

As you can see at the analytical drawings the case area is the only not excavated peace of the whole site ‘‘t veld’. It’s a heather temporary wetland where you can find relicts of the original plants like Potentilla erecta, some heather plants and a lot of Carex sorts. In a 20km circle you only can find some of these plants in the ‘Sterrebos’. The temporary wetland is a good habitat for a lot of amphibians, insects, …. Definitely with the presence of the field pond relicts in the area. Over the time the ponds had silted up, nowadays the relicts are nearly disappeared.

By recovering the field ponds there will be an revalorization of the site. The rare plants which are growing at the site will get more chances to survive. This by maintaining the site through attenuation.

== Rationale: Why is this case interesting? ==

"‘’t Veld’ is with his 44ha the biggest green area in the green less region of Ardooie-Tielt. ‘t Veld’ is a nature reserve in the framework of the ‘Natura 2000 network’. The aim of the natura 2000 network is to assure the long-term survival of Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats.

This area is situated 6km from my home.

The name ‘’t Veld’ comes from field(in dutch: veld) areas or wastine areas, these are treeless areas with field ponds and fragments of thickets. The vegetation was dominated by Heath and Carex.

In the 18the century a rich family build there castle in that area and they gave the order to plant a deciduous forest.

On the picture you can see an open space between the forest and the agricultural area, it’s a typical open space at the border of the forest where u can find relicts of the original vegetation, a lot of animals take advantage of these open spaces like amphibians and roe deer’s. Nowadays it’s also a good habitat for a lot of flowering plants.

The provincial government has made a management plan for the preservation of the typical habitat types that you can find in ‘’t Veld’.

In juli I graduated in a bachelor program in landscape development, that’s a follow up program during 1 year that I followed after my bachelor’s degree in landscape and garden architecture, both in Gendt. The landscape development program followed a strong analytic approach of landscapes on different scale levels, from large to very large scales. In the framework of the projects there was an important approach of some themes, for example; history, GIS, planning policy, ecology, … The aim of the projects was to get to some important planning and design principles by assessing and evaluating due the project period.

In Flanders (the Dutch part of Belgium) we have, considering the european landscape, quite a unique landscape. There is a lot of fragmentation of the open/natural spaces and that’s the reason why planners and landscape architects in Flanders have to deal with the issue of the connection of the few remaining open/natural spaces by natural corridors and the intern expending of the urban areas.

== Analytical drawings ==
Like I’ve said in the a isolated green area, a other area called ‘Sterrebos’ is also very valuable, it’s also an earlier field/wastine area.

The cultural influence is clearly perceivable through the time. The Castle and the avenues are visual perceivable, the excavation of the area by analyses of the maps and the ground of the site.

As you can see at the analytical drawings the case area is the only not excavated peace of the whole site ‘‘t veld’. It’s a heather temporary wetland where you can find relicts of the original plants like Potentilla erecta, some heather plants and a lot of Carex sorts. In a 20km circle you only can find some of these plants in the ‘Sterrebos’. The temporary wetland is a good habitat for a lot of amphibians, insects, …. Definitely with the presence of the field pond relicts in the area. Over the time the ponds had silted up, nowadays the relicts are nearly disappeared.

The name ‘’t Veld’ comes from field(in dutch: veld) areas or wastine areas, these are treeless areas with field ponds and fragments of thickets. The vegetation was dominated by Heath and Carex.

In the 18the century a rich family build there castle in that area and they gave the order to plant a deciduous forest.

On the picture you can see an open space between the forest and the agricultural area, it’s a typical open space at the border of the forest where u can find relicts of the original vegetation, a lot of animals take advantage of these open spaces like amphibians and roe deer’s. Nowadays it’s also a good habitat for a lot of flowering plants.

The provincial government has made a management plan for the preservation of the typical habitat types that you can find in ‘’t Veld’.

In juli I graduated in a bachelor program in landscape development, that’s a follow up program during 1 year that I followed after my bachelor’s degree in landscape and garden architecture, both in Gendt. The landscape development program followed a strong analytic approach of landscapes on different scale levels, from large to very large scales. In the framework of the projects there was an important approach of some themes, for example; history, GIS, planning policy, ecology, … The aim of the projects was to get to some important planning and design principles by assessing and evaluating due the project period.

In Flanders (the Dutch part of Belgium) we have, considering the european landscape, quite a unique landscape. There is a lot of fragmentation of the open/natural spaces and that’s the reason why planners and landscape architects in Flanders have to deal with the issue of the connection of the few remaining open/natural spaces by natural corridors and the intern expending of the urban areas.
