== Task ==

'''Assigned: Tuesday, October 19'''

'''Due: Monday, Nov. 8 / Nov. 15 for Kassel students'''

The pictures you have made for assignment 1 gave a brief overview of the landscape of your university town. In a second step you will now take a closer look to get a more in depth understanding of the current landscape. To start your documentation and interpretation, walk a complete transect from the city/town center to the edge of the settlement and examine what you see. Explore and analyze your landscape transect by making notes, taking pictures, and ‐ very important ‐ make video clips that document your walk. This can be done with a video camera or with the video function of your photo camera.

Beside a visual documentation, further background information is necessary, for example about ecological, social, cultural and economic aspects, design interventions, etc. which you can’t get with a visual examination only. Looking back into the past of the landscape gives you additional insight into how and why the landscape has transformed over time. Review relevant literature about this
landscape, browse the www, talk to people living in the area, etc.

Create 1) '''a video''' and 2) '''a presentation (ppt or similar)''' that can illustrate the findings of exploration.
Together these two inputs should clearly address the current state of the landscape, its change over time and an outlook to the future. Don’t be just descriptive. Analyse and comment what challenges this landscape faced over time and faces today. How did landscape architecture address them in the past, what approaches seem necessary for the future?

The video will document the most important and informative parts of your transect walk. Use maps, sections, diagrammatic drawings and other forms of documentation and interpretation in your ppt then to underline your analysis and findings. Include written comments on your presentation slides so that they are also understandable without your oral input.

'''Literature:'''

As a major reference for your analysis look at the following book:

*Corner, James; MacLean, Alex S. 1996. [http://moodle.hfwu.de/moodle/file.php/94/Literature/CornerMacLean_1996_small.pdf "Taking measures across the American landscape".] New Haven, Conn.: Yale Univ. Press.

=== Description ===

'''Tartu / Tarbatu / Dorpat / Yurjev'''

Located in the bed of river Emajõgi (Mother River) the town has it’s specific characteristics – river, hills surrounding it and lowlands around. Due to history, culture and developing ideas Tartu can be called ‘Town Interlaced with Nature’.

Three most significant aspects chosen by our group are: Emajõgi with surrounding green belt, Toomemägi with views and park, and nature areas around the city.

'''Emajõgi''' is probably the first thing noticed in Tartu. It divides city into two parts with several bridges connecting. Historically the river has been important trade route, but nowadays this function has ceased. The green belt, surrounding the river is the result of WW II and city council policy after the war was that instead of restoring houses, parks were created. Nowadays the parks surrounding the river are widely used for recreation and past-time activities, festivals and happenings are held on the river and spring floods make it the centre of city life in its own way.

'''Toomemägi''' with its long religious, defensive and cultural history has been the alternative city centre for centuries. Park, ruins of Dome church (probably dating back to 13th century), statues and bridges are one of the most important landmarks in Tartu known by all people who have been in town. Multiple functions (concerts, plays, recreational uses, sporting etc) combined with panoramic views over the town and river keep Toomemägi in the centre on everyday life on Tartu.

'''Nature areas around the town''' are the third aspects of landscape in Tartu. Even though the areas tend to be out of the town’s official borders, they are widely used in everyday life. The size of the town makes it possible to access its surroundings easily and fast, people are used to take short, almost everyday trips out of town to countryside. ‘Nature’ can be accessed in maximum 15 minutes drive or walk, so if we call Tartu ‘Town Interlaced with Nature’, we have to add its surroundings to the city and parks inside it.
