This project is based on the Growth of the city of Valladolid as a 'compact city' with dense and also compact
growing satellites. That means to be far from the 'diffuse city' growth process from another cities.

El Corredor - the linear area vacated by the burial of the tracks.
Los Talleres - the area vacated by the relocation of the railway workshops on the outskirts of the city.
La Esperanza-Ariza - the area released by the permanent disuse Ariza line and station.
Argales - the area currently occupied by the container station and welding tracks works.
Bus station - released by the relocation of the current season in a new location next to the railway station.

If we add these five areas up, the surface is significant. In fact, this project almost unprecedented in scale compared with the size of the city. The area it needs is more than 5% of the consolidated area of the city, and approximately 25% of Historic Town area.
Therefore, it means the removal of surface roads and reintegration of those areas where the city represents a unique opportunity to create the future of Valladolid.

The city has always had the same problem: train railway.
This physical barrier divides the city in two parts(east and west), nowadays without a good communication between them.
Hidding down the train railways should activate the fluency.

Richard Roger's team and Luis Vidal, spanish associated architect.
They gave the project to eh High Speed Society in 2003, including several city areas to be modify.
Reconnecting and Regenerating Valladolid city centre, Spain, by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners Vilady Asociados for
Valladolid Alta Velocidad, S.A. Of this city masterplan, the jury admired the focus brought to bear on a generic urban problem – the splitting of a town by natural and man-made barriers.
The masterplan provides layers of connection and amenities which transform the city and its environs

The existing urban structure is severely distorted, not only for the limited number of bridges over the river, but also by the small number of tunnels and viaducts that allow the crossing of the railway. As a result, there is a substantial pressure on those few points, resulting in high levels of congestion and conflicts of movement in those areas.

The same year a two months public information period was openned.
Modification or complaints were accepted.
The council has always kept a good information to the citizens about this huge project.
This is an urban project in the long term, therefore public participation can not be so continuos.

The council has organized different informative sessions. And new-ideas events in order to consider new proposals or incidental changes as far as citizens are concerned.
Magazines, newspapers and brochure have spreaded the main acting points of this project and new masterplan configuration.

This project is based on the Growth of the city of Valladolid as a 'compact city' with dense and also compact
growing satellites. That means to be far from the 'diffuse city' growth process from another cities.

El Corredor - the linear area vacated by the burial of the tracks.
Los Talleres - the area vacated by the relocation of the railway workshops on the outskirts of the city.
La Esperanza-Ariza - the area released by the permanent disuse Ariza line and station.
Argales - the area currently occupied by the container station and welding tracks works.
Bus station - released by the relocation of the current season in a new location next to the railway station.

If we add these five areas up, the surface is significant. In fact, this project almost unprecedented in scale compared with the size of the city. The area it needs is more than 5% of the consolidated area of the city, and approximately 25% of Historic Town area.
Therefore, it means the removal of surface roads and reintegration of those areas where the city represents a unique opportunity to create the future of Valladolid.

=== Rationale: Why is this case interesting? ===
Nowadays the urbanism in Spain and specially in the city of Madrid is not in its best moment beacuse of the speculation. For this reason is easy to find examples of bad practices of urbanism. For example is often to see disgragated neighbourhoods in wich people need to take the car for almost every movement; there is not functional mix ifnot there are parts of the city for residential uses other for industry of bussines and finally the services sector congregates in big malls.
For that reason the aim of our project is to make a neighbourhood where you can find almost all you need.
The speciall point is the posibility of grow your own food with the design of gardens integrated with the residential buildings.

The idea of promoting this kind of project was a common interest between the ecological groups and the public administration in order to fix this critical situation of the environment.

=== When was public participation most intensive? ===
With the first presentation of the project to the public, people was very sceptic about it because they find very hard to believe in the potential of the project; especially in the fact of cultivate their own food, because it was a very uncommon idea and people diden't trust it. Then after some meetings with people, where we had the opportunity to explain properly and in a cloeser way our idea, people starts to understand and believe in the possibilities of the project; since that moment people starts asking their questions and finding answers to their doubts.
Next step was when people starts showing us the new ideas for improove the project, and it was the most important amazing moment because it was a really participatory work.

=== Which participation tools have been applied? ===
At first the main tool has been an exibition in a congress building with the main images and the ideas of our projecet that we thought could be the most interesting and rappresentative for the people. We have designed a rappresentative symbol of our work with wich we designed pins, t-shirts and posters that we hanged up around all the city.
The idea was to pick the attention of the people, and to make them closer to the project.
After this first step, we go into a more serious comunication when we started the colloquy and all that things. We showed more concret informations and points wich could be interesting for their lifes. We prepared summaries, videos, and digital informations as virtual tours of the future neigborhood.

=== Which stakeholders have been involved? ===
First at all the citizens and future tenants; also of course the city council and all the burocratic organism.
Also the ecological groups and the promoters.

=== Have there been any festivities in order to involve the public? ===
In July the project has been presented to the public in a show in a congress building, where we showed the main ideas and symbol to describe our project to the people. It has gave us also the opportunity to develope our marketing.

=== Who made the major decisions and when? ===
The most influent figures where in one hand the city council because our project had to be in according with the legislation and the ordination. In other hand the promotor had a lot of influence because of the high cost of some points of our project. We had to redisigned that points in order to reduce costs.
We also paid attention to the ecological exigences because that it was one of the main intentions of our project.

Nowadays the urbanism in Spain and specially in the city of Madrid is not in its best moment beacuse of the speculation. For this reason is easy to find examples of bad practices of urbanism. For example is often to see disgragated neighbourhoods in wich people need to take the car for almost every movement; there is not functional mix ifnot there are parts of the city for residential uses other for industry of bussines and finally the services sector congregates in big malls.
For that reason the aim of our project is to make a neighbourhood where you can find almost all you need.
The speciall point is the posibility of grow your own food with the design of gardens integrated with the residential buildings.

The idea of promoting this kind of project was a common interest between the ecological groups and the public administration in order to fix this critical situation of the environment.

With the first presentation of the project to the public, people was very sceptic about it because they find very hard to believe in the potential of the project; especially in the fact of cultivate their own food, because it was a very uncommon idea and people diden't trust it. Then after some meetings with people, where we had the opportunity to explain properly and in a cloeser way our idea, people starts to understand and believe in the possibilities of the project; since that moment people starts asking their questions and finding answers to their doubts.
Next step was when people starts showing us the new ideas for improove the project, and it was the most important amazing moment because it was a really participatory work.

=== Which participation tools have been applied? ===
At first the main tool has been an exibition in a congress building with the main images and the ideas of our projecet that we thought could be the most interesting and rappresentative for the people. We have designed a rappresentative symbol of our work with wich we designed pins, t-shirts and posters that we hanged up around all the city.
The idea was to pick the attention of the people, and to make them closer to the project.
After this first step, we go into a more serious comunication when we started the colloquy and all that things. We showed more concret informations and points wich could be interesting for their lifes. We prepared summaries, videos, and digital informations as virtual tours of the future neigborhood.

First at all the citizens and future tenants; also of course the city council and all the burocratic organism.
Also the ecological groups and the promoters.

In July the project has been presented to the public in a show in a congress building, where we showed the main ideas and symbol to describe our project to the people. It has gave us also the opportunity to develope our marketing.

The most influent figures where in one hand the city council because our project had to be in according with the legislation and the ordination. In other hand the promotor had a lot of influence because of the high cost of some points of our project. We had to redisigned that points in order to reduce costs.
We also paid attention to the ecological exigences because that it was one of the main intentions of our project.

This project is based on the Growth of the city of Valladolid as a 'compact city' with dense and also compact

The city has always had the same problem: train railway.
This physical barrier divides the city in two parts(east and west), nowadays without a good communication between them.
Hidding down the train railways should activate the fluency.

Richard Roger's team and Luis Vidal, spanish associated architect.
They gave the project to eh High Speed Society in 2003, including several city areas to be modify.
Reconnecting and Regenerating Valladolid city centre, Spain, by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners Vilady Asociados for
Valladolid Alta Velocidad, S.A. Of this city masterplan, the jury admired the focus brought to bear on a generic urban problem – the splitting of a town by natural and man-made barriers.
The masterplan provides layers of connection and amenities which transform the city and its environs
