Gerdab-e-Ben (Ben Lagoon) is a beautiful attraction of Iran and it gives the region where it is located a lots of potentials.
Although Gerdab is an outstanding tourist region already (and was chosen for that in 2010), the area and it´s quality have a big potential for improvement, which would help to attract many more tourists as well.

The main problems we found on the site after our analysis ware:

-the heavy traffic around the lake (which make it seem more like a traffic turning point than an outstanding landscape and this can be nicely seen in the first picture on the slide where you have the yellow road surrounding Gerdab)

-this can also be seen in the second picture which is an analysis of communications and site contex. The lines that are coloured yellow are the main communication directions within the town of Ben itself so they are left like they are whereas the red coloured lines represent the road directions by the Gerdab lake and are something that needs to be changed. There are far to many roads surrounding Gerdab and this is a thing that could potentially be solved a lot better

-the discontinuous tree lines on the eastern side of the lagoon and the disconnection between the green spaces of the lagoon and the city can both be seen in the last analytical picture

-the lack of evergreen species and the wasted potential in the implementation of new residential areas are also some problems that were analysed

The main goals of our collaborative planting design of Gerdab-e Ben were:

-to improve the overall condition and planting scheme of the site´s green areas

-to move the position of the road surrounding Gerdab

-to analyze the existing facilities on the site and rethink their meaning, position, actual funtion and contribution to Gerdab

-to introduce new residential areas (with their additional elements)

-to make this outstanding (and someone´s everyday) landscape more “natural“ and “people friendly“ and as pleasant as it can be thus more attractive, unique, interesting and representative for both Ben´s residents as well as Gerdab´ visitors

First sketch on the left represents a conceptual zoning and in it the position of the main road has moved and smaller additional roads around Gerdab were cut out so as a side effect a big surface aveilable for planting and new residential areas was gained. Children´s playground, recreational zone, open air theatre next to a museum and an aromatic park are just some new features of Gerdab´s surroundings.

The lower picture on the right shows another approach that kept a lot of existing aspects Gerdab has now, but also introduced new ones: pathways, a botanic garden, sports grounds, a museum and a modern game world.

The last sketch on the upper right side shows how could a new solution function with an underground garage being a part of it. By putting parking underground more space would get green above the ground and that is an ideal concept of something that is both aesthetical and functional.

The main criteria for drawing this conclusion was really a fusion of everything that has been done previously. Through discussion the best parts of each idea were taken and thus the final proposal was made.

First sketch on the right shows a new zoning that now has a second road in the cental part of the site due to the needs of facilities that are going to be intoduced (open air theatre, museum). This is also the road that leads visitors to the entrance of the undergound garage. The new residential areas are : New pedestrian and cycling pathways, Children´s playground, Museum, open air theatre, Sports grounds, aromatic garden, grill and leisure zone, artistic zone and informal residential areas. The one´s we kept are: sailing camp, supermarket, coffee shop and the gas station.

On the upper left there is a concept of green structures visible along with its primary diagram and scheme in black and white. It is surrounded with pictures of plants that could potentially become a part of this site in the future and some of them are: Magnolia liliflora, Cercis siliquastrum, Picea pungens, Hedera helix, Juniperus horizontalis, Berberis thunbergii, Querqus brantii Lindl., Papaver spp... These were chosen with regards to the climate of the region. Their tolerance to cold winter and dry summer conditions was considered. The plants were chosen according to their type, growing form and flowering period.

The last sketch on the slide shows perspective drawings of different residential areas on the site. The upper two sketches of the 4 included show future pederstian and cycling pathways along the woodlans area as well as the one beside the lake itself. The 2 lower sketches show a wooden deck on the water that can be used as a tool of a child´s play as well as an informal residential area on the left and a children´s playground on the right. The philosophy of the playground came out of Gerdab´s site context. As it is a lake that is situated between 2 mountains, the central part of the playground is consisted of 2 high mounds with slides and a treehouse that have a water feature (maybe a fountain) in between. In this way the playground is a conceptual duplicate of the site itself.

== Landscape and/or urban context of your case ==

Gerdab is a beautiful lagoon that is located in the suburbs of the city Ben in Iran. It´s a very important tourist attraction that has a significant cultural and economical role for city of Ben. The lagoon measures 38,000 m2 and green spaces around (that were established in 1950) take up 100,000 m2 of the landscape´s surface. Gerdab is placed near two mountains which in combination with the mentioned trees make a beautiful scenery. In addition , the reflection of mountains on the lagoon itself makes an eye-catching sight that many tourists capture. Gerdab was also chosen as an outstanding tourist region of Iran in 2010.

There´s a strong interaction between nature and culture in Gerdab. In the first days of the Iranian new year (called Norooz celebration) which is simultaneous with the beginning of spring, many people go to have a recreation in Gerdab. In the enterance way of the lagoon, there is a statue of one of the Iranian poets and writers from the 18th century Mirza Habib and near it there is an inscription that mentiones his biography. It seems that in Gerdab, nature has a stronger force than culture. It seems that way because of the natural aestethics and the combination of natural elements (lagoon, trees and mountains). Near the lagoon there are some facilities like a supermarket, a coffee shop, a sailing camp, a children´s park, and a gas and petrol station. These help tourists to have a more comfotable stay.
However, some human/cultural impact is neccessary for improving the touristic situation. For example the problem of heavy traffic, especially in summer, should be solved. Also with regard to the tourist population, there is a great potential to construct some cultural centers for introducing cultural values of the city.

It is believed that an ecological approach to planting design in Gerdab can help improve the quality of the landscape itself and create a sustainable landscape along the way. This idea can also decline the maintenance costs.
There are a few problems regarding green spaces and landscapes of Gerdab. Discontinuous tree lines on the eastern side of the lagoon (A, 3rd representation) and the disconnection between green spaces of the lagoon and the city (B, 3rd representation) are the biggest ones. A planting design that would consider the ecological principles (for example using native plants) could possibly solve the mentioned problems and cause a more sustainable landscape.

The main goals of our collaborative planting design of Gerdab-e Ben are:

1. to improve the overall condition and planting scheme of the site´s green areas (to fix the existing problems regarding the discontinuous tree lines surrounding the lake and the disconnection between the city of Ben and the lake itself in addition to the new planting plan that needs to be a part of the future project and that could introduce different sorts of perrenials, ornamental plants and overall native planting design that could possibly fit best into the site)

2. to move the position of the road surrounding Gerdab (currently the lake looks like a traffic turning point which does not contribute to the “natural look & feel“ that this “Outstanding tourist region“ has and needs to emphasize even more in the future)

3. to analyze the existing facilities on the site and rethink their meaning, position, actual funtion and contribution to Gerdab: which one´s should be kept and which one´s the site can do without and are not really needed?

4. to introduce new residential areas (with their additional elements) on the site and ajust them to all kinds of user profiles within different age groups

== Summary of the collaborative process ==

Gerdab-e-Ben (Ben Lagoon) is a beautiful attraction of Iran and it gives the region where it is located a lots of potentials.

Although Gerdab is an outstanding tourist region already, the area and it´s quality have a big potential for improvement, which would help to attract many more tourists as well.

The main problems we found on the site after our analysis ware the heavy traffic around the lake, the discontinuous tree lines on the eastern side of the lagoon, the remarkable disconnection between the green spaces of the lagoon and the city, the lack of evergreen species and the wasted potential in the implementation of new residential areas.

After considering all this problems we did our collaborative design synthesis, with which not only were we aiming to address the problems we found, but generally improve the landscape and quality of the Gerdab area.

Our main propositions:

• The position of the road surrounding Gerdab was moved and new road networks introduced.

• Implementation of an underground garage system to decrease the level of traffic and parked cars on the ground (Underground parking).

• Planting design schemes and green space situations of Gerdab were corrected and improved.

• Implementation of new facilities and areas: pedestrian and cycling pathways, children´s playground, recreational zone, open air theatre, aromatic garden, museum, etc.

Gerdab is a beautiful lagoon that is located in the suburbs of the city Ben in Iran. It´s a very important tourist attraction that has a significant cultural and economical role for city of Ben. The lagoon measures 38,000 m2 and green spaces around (that were established in 1950) take up 100,000 m2 of the landscape´s surface. Gerdab is placed near two mountains which in combination with the mentioned trees make a beautiful scenery. In addition , the reflection of mountains on the lagoon itself makes an eye-catching sight that many tourists capture. Gerdab was also chosen as an outstanding tourist region of Iran in 2010.

There´s a strong interaction between nature and culture in Gerdab. In the first days of the Iranian new year (called Norooz celebration) which is simultaneous with the beginning of spring, many people go to have a recreation in Gerdab. In the enterance way of the lagoon, there is a statue of one of the Iranian poets and writers from the 18th century Mirza Habib and near it there is an inscription that mentiones his biography. It seems that in Gerdab, nature has a stronger force than culture. It seems that way because of the natural aestethics and the combination of natural elements (lagoon, trees and mountains). Near the lagoon there are some facilities like a supermarket, a coffee shop, a sailing camp, a children´s park, and a gas and petrol station. These help tourists to have a more comfotable stay.
However, some human/cultural impact is neccessary for improving the touristic situation. For example the problem of heavy traffic, especially in summer, should be solved. Also with regard to the tourist population, there is a great potential to construct some cultural centers for introducing cultural values of the city.

It is believed that an ecological approach to planting design in Gerdab can help improve the quality of the landscape itself and create a sustainable landscape along the way. This idea can also decline the maintenance costs.
There are a few problems regarding green spaces and landscapes of Gerdab. Discontinuous tree lines on the eastern side of the lagoon (A, 3rd representation) and the disconnection between green spaces of the lagoon and the city (B, 3rd representation) are the biggest ones. A planting design that would consider the ecological principles (for example using native plants) could possibly solve the mentioned problems and cause a more sustainable landscape.

The main goals of our collaborative planting design of Gerdab-e Ben are:

1. to improve the overall condition and planting scheme of the site´s green areas (to fix the existing problems regarding the discontinuous tree lines surrounding the lake and the disconnection between the city of Ben and the lake itself in addition to the new planting plan that needs to be a part of the future project and that could introduce different sorts of perrenials, ornamental plants and overall native planting design that could possibly fit best into the site)

2. to move the position of the road surrounding Gerdab (currently the lake looks like a traffic turning point which does not contribute to the “natural look & feel“ that this “Outstanding tourist region“ has and needs to emphasize even more in the future)

3. to analyze the existing facilities on the site and rethink their meaning, position, actual funtion and contribution to Gerdab: which one´s should be kept and which one´s the site can do without and are not really needed?

4. to introduce new residential areas (with their additional elements) on the site and ajust them to all kinds of user profiles within different age groups

5. to make this outstanding (and someone´s everyday) landscape more “natural“ and “people friendly“ and as pleasant as it can be thus more attractive, unique, interesting and representative for both Ben´s residents as well as Gerdab´ visitors

== Summary of the collaborative process ==

Gerdab-e-Ben (Ben Lagoon) is a beautiful attraction of Iran and it gives the region where it is located a lots of potentials.

Although Gerdab is an outstanding tourist region already, the area and it´s quality have a big potential for improvement, which would help to attract many more tourists as well.

The main problems we found on the site after our analysis ware the heavy traffic around the lake, the discontinuous tree lines on the eastern side of the lagoon, the remarkable disconnection between the green spaces of the lagoon and the city, the lack of evergreen species and the wasted potential in the implementation of new residential areas.

After considering all this problems we did our collaborative design synthesis, with which not only were we aiming to address the problems we found, but generally improve the landscape and quality of the Gerdab area.

Our main propositions:

• The position of the road surrounding Gerdab was moved and new road networks introduced.

• Implementation of an underground garage system to decrease the level of traffic and parked cars on the ground (Underground parking).

• Planting design schemes and green space situations of Gerdab were corrected and improved.

• Implementation of new facilities and areas: pedestrian and cycling pathways, children´s playground, recreational zone, open air theatre, aromatic garden, museum, etc.

== Summary of the collaborative process ==

Gerdab-e-Ben (Ben Lagoon) is a beautiful attraction of Iran and it gives the region where it is located a lots of potentials.

Although Gerdab is an outstanding tourist region already, the area and it´s quality have a big potential for improvement, which would help to attract many more tourists as well.

The main problems we found on the site after our analysis ware the heavy traffic around the lake, the discontinuous tree lines on the eastern side of the lagoon, the remarkable disconnection between the green spaces of the lagoon and the city, the lack of evergreen species and the wasted potential in the implementation of new residential areas.

After considering all this problems we did our collaborative design synthesis, with which not only were we aiming to address the problems we found, but generally improve the landscape and quality of the Gerdab area.

Our main propositions:

• The position of the road surrounding Gerdab was moved and new road networks introduced.

• Implementation of an underground garage system to decrease the level of traffic and parked cars on the ground (Underground parking).

• Planting design schemes and green space situations of Gerdab were corrected and improved.

• Implementation of new facilities and areas; for example pedestrian and cycling pathways, children´s playground, recreational zone, open air theatre, aromatic garden, museum, etc.

== Landscape and/or urban context of your case ==

Gerdab is a beautiful lagoon that is located in the suburbs of the city Ben in Iran. It´s a very important tourist attraction that has a significant cultural and economical role for city of Ben. The lagoon measures 38,000 m2 and green spaces around (that were established in 1950) take up 100,000 m2 of the landscape´s surface. Gerdab is placed near two mountains which in combination with the mentioned trees make a beautiful scenery. In addition , the reflection of mountains on the lagoon itself makes an eye-catching sight that many tourists capture. Gerdab was also chosen as an outstanding tourist region of Iran in 2010.

There´s a strong interaction between nature and culture in Gerdab. In the first days of the Iranian new year (called Norooz celebration) which is simultaneous with the beginning of spring, many people go to have a recreation in Gerdab. In the enterance way of the lagoon, there is a statue of one of the Iranian poets and writers from the 18th century Mirza Habib and near it there is an inscription that mentiones his biography. It seems that in Gerdab, nature has a stronger force than culture. It seems that way because of the natural aestethics and the combination of natural elements (lagoon, trees and mountains). Near the lagoon there are some facilities like a supermarket, a coffee shop, a sailing camp, a children´s park, and a gas and petrol station. These help tourists to have a more comfotable stay.
However, some human/cultural impact is neccessary for improving the touristic situation. For example the problem of heavy traffic, especially in summer, should be solved. Also with regard to the tourist population, there is a great potential to construct some cultural centers for introducing cultural values of the city.

It is believed that an ecological approach to planting design in Gerdab can help improve the quality of the landscape itself and create a sustainable landscape along the way. This idea can also decline the maintenance costs.
There are a few problems regarding green spaces and landscapes of Gerdab. Discontinuous tree lines on the eastern side of the lagoon (A, 3rd representation) and the disconnection between green spaces of the lagoon and the city (B, 3rd representation) are the biggest ones. A planting design that would consider the ecological principles (for example using native plants) could possibly solve the mentioned problems and cause a more sustainable landscape.

== What are the objectives of your design? ==

The main goals of our collaborative planting design of Gerdab-e Ben are:

1. to improve the overall condition and planting scheme of the site´s green areas (to fix the existing problems regarding the discontinuous tree lines surrounding the lake and the disconnection between the city of Ben and the lake itself in addition to the new planting plan that needs to be a part of the future project and that could introduce different sorts of perrenials, ornamental plants and overall native planting design that could possibly fit best into the site)

2. to move the position of the road surrounding Gerdab (currently the lake looks like a traffic turning point which does not contribute to the “natural look & feel“ that this “Outstanding tourist region“ has and needs to emphasize even more in the future)

3. to analyze the existing facilities on the site and rethink their meaning, position, actual funtion and contribution to Gerdab: which one´s should be kept and which one´s the site can do without and are not really needed?

4. to introduce new residential areas (with their additional elements) on the site and ajust them to all kinds of user profiles within different age groups

5. to make this outstanding (and someone´s everyday) landscape more “natural“ and “people friendly“ and as pleasant as it can be thus more attractive, unique, interesting and representative for both Ben´s residents as well as Gerdab´ visitors

• The position of the road surrounding Gerdab was moved and new road networks introduced.

• Implementation of an underground garage system to decrease the level of traffic and parked cars on the ground (Underground parking).

• Planting design schemes and green space situations of Gerdab were corrected and improved.

• Implementation of new facilities and areas; for example pedestrian and cycling pathways, children´s playground, recreational zone, open air theatre, aromatic garden, museum, etc.

== Landscape and/or urban context of your case ==

Gerdab is a beautiful lagoon that is located in the suburbs of the city Ben in Iran. It´s a very important tourist attraction that has a significant cultural and economical role for city of Ben. The lagoon measures 38,000 m2 and green spaces around (that were established in 1950) take up 100,000 m2 of the landscape´s surface. Gerdab is placed near two mountains which in combination with the mentioned trees make a beautiful scenery. In addition , the reflection of mountains on the lagoon itself makes an eye-catching sight that many tourists capture. Gerdab was also chosen as an outstanding tourist region of Iran in 2010.

There´s a strong interaction between nature and culture in Gerdab. In the first days of the Iranian new year (called Norooz celebration) which is simultaneous with the beginning of spring, many people go to have a recreation in Gerdab. In the enterance way of the lagoon, there is a statue of one of the Iranian poets and writers from the 18th century Mirza Habib and near it there is an inscription that mentiones his biography. It seems that in Gerdab, nature has a stronger force than culture. It seems that way because of the natural aestethics and the combination of natural elements (lagoon, trees and mountains). Near the lagoon there are some facilities like a supermarket, a coffee shop, a sailing camp, a children´s park, and a gas and petrol station. These help tourists to have a more comfotable stay.
However, some human/cultural impact is neccessary for improving the touristic situation. For example the problem of heavy traffic, especially in summer, should be solved. Also with regard to the tourist population, there is a great potential to construct some cultural centers for introducing cultural values of the city.

It is believed that an ecological approach to planting design in Gerdab can help improve the quality of the landscape itself and create a sustainable landscape along the way. This idea can also decline the maintenance costs.
There are a few problems regarding green spaces and landscapes of Gerdab. Discontinuous tree lines on the eastern side of the lagoon (A, 3rd representation) and the disconnection between green spaces of the lagoon and the city (B, 3rd representation) are the biggest ones. A planting design that would consider the ecological principles (for example using native plants) could possibly solve the mentioned problems and cause a more sustainable landscape.

The main goals of our collaborative planting design of Gerdab-e Ben are:

1. to improve the overall condition and planting scheme of the site´s green areas (to fix the existing problems regarding the discontinuous tree lines surrounding the lake and the disconnection between the city of Ben and the lake itself in addition to the new planting plan that needs to be a part of the future project and that could introduce different sorts of perrenials, ornamental plants and overall native planting design that could possibly fit best into the site)

2. to move the position of the road surrounding Gerdab (currently the lake looks like a traffic turning point which does not contribute to the “natural look & feel“ that this “Outstanding tourist region“ has and needs to emphasize even more in the future)

3. to analyze the existing facilities on the site and rethink their meaning, position, actual funtion and contribution to Gerdab: which one´s should be kept and which one´s the site can do without and are not really needed?

4. to introduce new residential areas (with their additional elements) on the site and ajust them to all kinds of user profiles within different age groups

5. to make this outstanding (and someone´s everyday) landscape more “natural“ and “people friendly“ and as pleasant as it can be thus more attractive, unique, interesting and representative for both Ben´s residents as well as Gerdab´ visitors

== Summary of the collaborative process ==

Gerdab-e-Ben (Ben Lagoon) is a beautiful attraction of Iran and it gives the region where it is located a lots of potentials.

Although Gerdab is an outstanding tourist region already, the area and it´s quality have a big potential for improvement, which would help to attract many more tourists as well.

The main problems we found on the site after our analysis ware the heavy traffic around the lake, the discontinuous tree lines on the eastern side of the lagoon, the remarkable disconnection between the green spaces of the lagoon and the city, the lack of evergreen species and the wasted potential in the implementation of new residential areas.

1. to improve the overall condition and planting scheme of the site´s green areas (to fix the existing problems regarding the discontinuous tree lines surrounding the lake and the disconnection between the city of Ben and the lake itself in addition to the new planting plan that needs to be a part of the future project and that could introduce different sorts of perrenials, ornamental plants and overall native planting design that could possibly fit best into the site)

2. to move the position of the road surrounding Gerdab (currently the lake looks like a traffic turning point which does not contribute to the “natural look & feel“ that this “Outstanding tourist region“ has and needs to emphasize even more in the future)

3. to analyze the existing facilities on the site and rethink their meaning, position, actual funtion and contribution to Gerdab: which one´s should be kept and which one´s the site can do without and are not really needed?

4. to introduce new residential areas (with their additional elements) on the site and ajust them to all kinds of user profiles within different age groups

Gerdab is a beautiful lagoon that is located in the suburbs of the city Ben in Iran. It´s a very important tourist attraction that has a significant cultural and economical role for city of Ben. The lagoon measures 38,000 m2 and green spaces around (that were established in 1950) take up 100,000 m2 of the landscape´s surface. Gerdab is placed near two mountains which in combination with the mentioned trees make a beautiful scenery. == What are the objectives of your design? ==

The main goals of our collaborative planting design of Gerdab-e Ben are:

1. to improve the overall condition and planting scheme of the site´s green areas (to fix the existing problems regarding the discontinuous tree lines surrounding the lake and the disconnection between the city of Ben and the lake itself in addition to the new planting plan that needs to be a part of the future project and that could introduce different sorts of perrenials, ornamental plants and overall native planting design that could possibly fit best into the site)

2. to move the position of the road surrounding Gerdab (currently the lake looks like a traffic turning point which does not contribute to the “natural look & feel“ that this “Outstanding tourist region“ has and needs to emphasize even more in the future)

3. to analyze the existing facilities on the site and rethink their meaning, position, actual funtion and contribution to Gerdab: which one´s should be kept and which one´s the site can do without and are not really needed?

4. to introduce new residential areas (with their additional elements) on the site and ajust them to all kinds of user profiles within different age groups

5. to make this outstanding (and someone´s everyday) landscape more “natural“ and “people friendly“ and as pleasant as it can be thus more attractive, unique, interesting and representative for both Ben´s residents as well as Gerdab´ visitors

== Landscape and/or urban context of your case ==

Gerdab is a beautiful lagoon that is located in the suburbs of the city Ben in Iran. It´s a very important tourist attraction that has a significant cultural and economical role for city of Ben. The lagoon measures 38,000 m2 and green spaces around (that were established in 1950) take up 100,000 m2 of the landscape´s surface. Gerdab is placed near two mountains which in combination with the mentioned trees make a beautiful scenery. In addition , the reflection of mountains on the lagoon itself makes an eye-catching sight that many tourists capture. Gerdab was also chosen as an outstanding tourist region of Iran in 2010.

There´s a strong interaction between nature and culture in Gerdab. In the first days of the Iranian new year (called Norooz celebration) which is simultaneous with the beginning of spring, many people go to have a recreation in Gerdab. In the enterance way of the lagoon, there is a statue of one of the Iranian poets and writers from the 18th century Mirza Habib and near it there is an inscription that mentiones his biography. It seems that in Gerdab, nature has a stronger force than culture. It seems that way because of the natural aestethics and the combination of natural elements (lagoon, trees and mountains). Near the lagoon there are some facilities like a supermarket, a coffee shop, a sailing camp, a children´s park, and a gas and petrol station. These help tourists to have a more comfotable stay.
However, some human/cultural impact is neccessary for improving the touristic situation. For example the problem of heavy traffic, especially in summer, should be solved. Also with regard to the tourist population, there is a great potential to construct some cultural centers for introducing cultural values of the city.

It is believed that an ecological approach to planting design in Gerdab can help improve the quality of the landscape itself and create a sustainable landscape along the way. This idea can also decline the maintenance costs.
There are a few problems regarding green spaces and landscapes of Gerdab. Discontinuous tree lines on the eastern side of the lagoon (A, 3rd representation) and the disconnection between green spaces of the lagoon and the city (B, 3rd representation) are the biggest ones. A planting design that would consider the ecological principles (for example using native plants) could possibly solve the mentioned problems and cause a more sustainable landscape.

Gerdab is a beautiful lagoon that is located in the suburbs of the city Ben in Iran. It´s a very important tourist attraction that has a significant cultural and economical role for city of Ben. The lagoon measures 38,000 m2 and green spaces around (that were established in 1950) take up 100,000 m2 of the landscape´s surface. Gerdab is placed near two mountains which in combination with the mentioned trees make a beautiful scenery. In addition , the reflection of mountains on the lagoon itself makes an eye-catching sight that many tourists capture. Gerdab was also chosen as an outstanding tourist region of Iran in 2010.

There´s a strong interaction between nature and culture in Gerdab. In the first days of the Iranian new year (called Norooz celebration) which is simultaneous with the beginning of spring, many people go to have a recreation in Gerdab. In the enterance way of the lagoon, there is a statue of one of the Iranian poets and writers from the 18th century Mirza Habib and near it there is an inscription that mentiones his biography. It seems that in Gerdab, nature has a stronger force than culture. It seems that way because of the natural aestethics and the combination of natural elements (lagoon, trees and mountains). Near the lagoon there are some facilities like a supermarket, a coffee shop, a sailing camp, a children´s park, and a gas and petrol station. These help tourists to have a more comfotable stay.
However, some human/cultural impact is neccessary for improving the touristic situation. For example the problem of heavy traffic, especially in summer, should be solved. Also with regard to the tourist population, there is a great potential to construct some cultural centers for introducing cultural values of the city.

It is believed that an ecological approach to planting design in Gerdab can help improve the quality of the landscape itself and create a sustainable landscape along the way. This idea can also decline the maintenance costs.
There are a few problems regarding green spaces and landscapes of Gerdab. Discontinuous tree lines on the eastern side of the lagoon (A, 3rd representation) and the disconnection between green spaces of the lagoon and the city (B, 3rd representation) are the biggest ones. A planting design that would consider the ecological principles (for example using native plants) could possibly solve the mentioned problems and cause a more sustainable landscape.

The main goals of our collaborative planting design of Gerdab-e Ben are:

1. to improve the overall condition and planting scheme of the site´s green areas (to fix the existing problems regarding the discontinuous tree lines surrounding the lake and the disconnection between the city of Ben and the lake itself in addition to the new planting plan that needs to be a part of the future project and that could introduce different sorts of perrenials, ornamental plants and overall native planting design that could possibly fit best into the site)

2. to move the position of the road surrounding Gerdab (currently the lake looks like a traffic turning point which does not contribute to the “natural look & feel“ that this “Outstanding tourist region“ has and needs to emphasize even more in the future)

3. to analyze the existing facilities on the site and rethink their meaning, position, actual funtion and contribution to Gerdab: which one´s should be kept and which one´s the site can do without and are not really needed?

Gerdab is a beautiful lagoon that is located in the suburbs of the city Ben in Iran. It´s a very important tourist attraction that has a significant cultural and economical role for city of Ben. The lagoon measures 38,000 m2 and green spaces around (that were established in 1950) take up 100,000 m2 of the landscape´s surface. Gerdab is placed near two mountains which in combination with the mentioned trees make a beautiful scenery. In addition , the reflection of mountains on the lagoon itself makes an eye-catching sight that many tourists capture. Gerdab was also chosen as an outstanding tourist region of Iran in 2010.

There´s a strong interaction between nature and culture in Gerdab. In the first days of the Iranian new year (called Norooz celebration) which is simultaneous with the beginning of spring, many people go to have a recreation in Gerdab. In the enterance way of the lagoon, there is a statue of one of the Iranian poets and writers from the 18th century Mirza Habib and near it there is an inscription that mentiones his biography. It seems that in Gerdab, nature has a stronger force than culture. It seems that way because of the natural aestethics and the combination of natural elements (lagoon, trees and mountains). Near the lagoon there are some facilities like a supermarket, a coffee shop, a sailing camp, a children´s park, and a gas and petrol station. These help tourists to have a more comfotable stay.
However, some human/cultural impact is neccessary for improving the touristic situation. For example the problem of heavy traffic, especially in summer, should be solved. Also with regard to the tourist population, there is a great potential to construct some cultural centers for introducing cultural values of the city.

It is believed that an ecological approach to planting design in Gerdab can help improve the quality of the landscape itself and create a sustainable landscape along the way. This idea can also decline the maintenance costs.
There are a few problems regarding green spaces and landscapes of Gerdab. Discontinuous tree lines on the eastern side of the lagoon (A, 3rd representation) and the disconnection between green spaces of the lagoon and the city (B, 3rd representation) are the biggest ones. A planting design that would consider the ecological principles (for example using native plants) could possibly solve the mentioned problems and cause a more sustainable landscape.

The main goals of our collaborative planting design of Gerdab-e Ben are:

1. to improve the overall condition and planting scheme of the site´s green areas (to fix the existing problems regarding the discontinuous tree lines surrounding the lake and the disconnection between the city of Ben and the lake itself in addition to the new planting plan that needs to be a part of the future project and that could introduce different sorts of perrenials, ornamental plants and overall native planting design that could possibly fit best into the site)

2. to move the position of the road surrounding Gerdab (currently the lake looks like a traffic turning point which does not contribute to the “natural look & feel“ that this “Outstanding tourist region“ has and needs to emphasize even more in the future)

3. to analyze the existing facilities on the site and rethink their meaning, position, actual funtion and contribution to Gerdab: which one´s should be kept and which one´s the site can do without and are not really needed?

4. to introduce new residential areas (with their additional elements) on the site and ajust them to all kinds of user profiles within different age groups

== Landscape and/or urban context of your case ==

Gerdab is a beautiful lagoon that is located in the suburbs of the city Ben in Iran. It´s a very important tourist attraction that has a significant cultural and economical role for city of Ben. The lagoon measures 38,000 m2 and green spaces around (that were established in 1950) take up 100,000 m2 of the landscape´s surface. Gerdab is placed near two mountains which in combination with the mentioned trees make a beautiful scenery. In addition , the reflection of mountains on the lagoon itself makes an eye-catching sight that many tourists capture. Gerdab was also chosen as an outstanding tourist region of Iran in 2010.

There´s a strong interaction between nature and culture in Gerdab. In the first days of the Iranian new year (called Norooz celebration) which is simultaneous with the beginning of spring, many people go to have a recreation in Gerdab. In the enterance way of the lagoon, there is a statue of one of the Iranian poets and writers from the 18th century Mirza Habib and near it there is an inscription that mentiones his biography. It seems that in Gerdab, nature has a stronger force than culture. It seems that way because of the natural aestethics and the combination of natural elements (lagoon, trees and mountains). Near the lagoon there are some facilities like a supermarket, a coffee shop, a sailing camp, a children´s park, and a gas and petrol station. These help tourists to have a more comfotable stay.
However, some human/cultural impact is neccessary for improving the touristic situation. For example the problem of heavy traffic, especially in summer, should be solved. Also with regard to the tourist population, there is a great potential to construct some cultural centers for introducing cultural values of the city.

It is believed that an ecological approach to planting design in Gerdab can help improve the quality of the landscape itself and create a sustainable landscape along the way. This idea can also decline the maintenance costs.
There are a few problems regarding green spaces and landscapes of Gerdab. Discontinuous tree lines on the eastern side of the lagoon (A, 3rd representation) and the disconnection between green spaces of the lagoon and the city (B, 3rd representation) are the biggest ones. A planting design that would consider the ecological principles (for example using native plants) could possibly solve the mentioned problems and cause a more sustainable landscape.

== What are the objectives of your design? ==

The main goals of our collaborative planting design of Gerdab-e Ben are:

1. to improve the overall condition and planting scheme of the site´s green areas (to fix the existing problems regarding the discontinuous tree lines surrounding the lake and the disconnection between the city of Ben and the lake itself in addition to the new planting plan that needs to be a part of the future project and that could introduce different sorts of perrenials, ornamental plants and overall native planting design that could possibly fit best into the site)

2. to move the position of the road surrounding Gerdab (currently the lake looks like a traffic turning point which does not contribute to the “natural look & feel“ that this “Outstanding tourist region“ has and needs to emphasize even more in the future)

3. to analyze the existing facilities on the site and rethink their meaning, position, actual funtion and contribution to Gerdab: which one´s should be kept and which one´s the site can do without and are not really needed?

4. to introduce new residential areas (with their additional elements) on the site and ajust them to all kinds of user profiles within different age groups

5. to make this outstanding (and someone´s everyday) landscape more “natural“ and “people friendly“ and as pleasant as it can be thus more attractive, unique, interesting and representative for both Ben´s residents as well as Gerdab´ visitors

''Leon Plahuta'': The wilderness factor you specified to be as one of the stongest aspects of your chosen site is something that is really visible from your study´s cover photo and it really intrigued me and cought my attention from the very beginning. The contrast between something that is completely human-made (residential areas and the railway lines) and the river that is by itself “wild“ (as you descibed it) is strong and powerful and I can easily see why you fell in love with the site and it´s uniqueness. You also mentioned you worked as a landscpae architect for 2 years and was a part of a lot of projects (parks, public spaces etc.) so you must have seen spaces that are both larger in scale and more representative when confronted, but yet you chose a “simple“ green area by the river which many would not even notice (and sadly don´t). It seems to me your “professional eye“ is well trained and you really do notice the sometimes “forgotten“ everyday landscapes that are very valueble to the society which is really great and I congrat you for that. The changes of the site throughout the history are also very interesting and this is certainly not the only case were nature and it´s values were decreased due to urbanisation and industrialisation progress and processes. Although changed by “artificial interventions“, this site surely has the potential you highlight and can get back the beauty it once had. Changing it to be more human-accessible may be one of the keys of it because this forgotten zone deserves more than being just a pass-by sight for the people living near by. You sketch made the situation even more alive and it can easily be seen (or imagined) how the space could change in 5 or 10 years from now.

''Leon Plahuta'': The thing that intrigued me most about this case study is the politaical and sociological undicisiveness when it comes to the future landscape management of the river Uppsala. What to do and how to behave when the landscape that surrounds us needs improvement on one side, but also protection on the other? Which way to take and what actions need to be done to set a propper assesment of the parts that are still not used in the way the maybe should be? The questions of landscape assesment and evaluation as well as perceivement were popping up in my head when reading this case study which I think has a big potential and a lot of complexity (maybe even more than this on-line seminar can handle). At the end I think you should have maybe said a little bit more about the way you perceive the space and give a suggestion that could maybe also lean to a certain path the Uppsala and it´s surroundings are heading to (according to your evaluations/studies or personal feelings/opinions).

''Leon Plahuta'': I have to admitt this case was interesting because of a lot of things. First of all, the depth and the amount of energy you put into the study has a certain wow-factor by itself. A lot of text, a lot of informations, a lot of photos and sketches, a lot of everything really; and it is displayed so nicely you can easily scroll down and go through it all and not even notice the lenght of the page nor the time you have spent reading it all. Nicely done. The poems were especially a nice touch to the whole thing. You have really tried to bring the look & feel of the space as close to the reader as it can get and succeeded along the way. Also, the hierarchy in which you explained everything is very well put together and one can easily follow your taughts and points you were trying to make. Your landscape & urban context is a pefect example of this (and I really liked the short, but very interesting “ How the Moorland came about“). However, the things I like the most are the natural dynamic versus cultural framework section with the concept map and the highlighted potentials & problems as well as your first analytical sketch where you showed the map with significant points along the route you chose. Here it is clearly visible you put a lot of effort into this task and let yourself think from a lot of different points of view, which is a great thing because it shows you are not afraid to search, look, test and explore various parts of the landscape you chose. I don´t know whether you have some “comfort zones“ when it comes to your current landscape architecture studies and preferences or not, but this study proves and showes that if you do infact have some, you certainly hide them well cause they are not visible here what so ever because every part of your study is done with equal amount of energy and patience devoted to it. The drawings and sketches I simply love because they are not your usual everyday tools of expressing one´s points of view, but something that is really special and unique. In the future, I would maybe ease up with the heavy expressive colors at some parts cause after looking through the whole “Analytical & Projective“ part I got lost at one point and everything looked very similar. Maybe you could stick to one drawing technique at one part and than transfer to another at another part. That way all the things you want to say would be visually even more clear and the reader could also visually distinguish one part from the other even better (eg. using bright color pencils and markers in the analytical part and then collage with darker colors in the projective part or using different colors in the analytical part but only shades of one color with the addition of black & grey parts in the projective one). Hope you understood what I meant. And hey, since you are just finishing your Bs studies, maybe you should also think about making this case study your Final thesis/project. You have more than enough to start and the topic and the way you presented it are more than interesting. All in all, very good work.
