The area is placed along the river Adda, in the south of Lodi town . Milan city is 50 km far away and Lodi town only 12 km. The area is placed inside the Cavenago d’Adda municipality and is located next to the Adda river course. The area is actually inside an old meander of the river and is dedicated to the agriculture production. The context is high relevant from different point of views:

-for the environment, there are a lot of wetlands, some haunting reserves, rich river vegetation, beaches, banks and dykes;

-for the economy, high agriculture use direct to cultivate mais and grass for cow farms to produce the milk in the Grana Padano DOP cheese network;

-for the culture, there are some old urban villages with churches, villas, mills and farms.

The area is next to the current river course and is submitted to several flooding episodes during all the seasons in case of abundant rain. The area is formed by rural active fields, corn and grass, two farms, for cows and milk, and a private building, which was the old river camp of the municipality.

'''Biogeography'''

The Adda river is one of the main tributary to the '''Po''', the main river in the north of Italy.
The Adda borns in the Alps and crosses all the ''Lombardia'' region, passing through the ''Lecco'' lake, arrives in the flat area of the '''Pianura Padana'''. The Adda river is protected by '''two regional parks''': the ''North'', between the lake and Lodi town, and the ''South'' one, from Lodi town to the Po river. The two parks differ for the context the river crosses by and for the river course's features.
The case study belongs to the South park area, where the course of the river becomes wider and with a lot of meanders, due to its lower speed across the plain( pic. 1). This part of the plain is dominated by the Adda and the Lambro river courses and by numerous canals for irrigation. The '''ecologic structure''' is based on the water courses and on their vegetation areas. (pic.2) The South park is characterized by a series of '''dead river branches ''', beside the meanders; one of the most famous is the Soltarico branch, originated from the flood in the 1976 when the river skipped the Soltarico meander and originated 7 km of a series of wetlands and islands. Beside the Soltarico reserve there are other 5 natural reserve made out from dead branches (pic.3). These protected areas (Life EU network) are important for their flora and fauna habitats, rare in the plain around.

''The case study is placed in one dead river branch and is the only one not transformed in a protected area.''

Even though the importance of these reserves, the Adda South Park has not many '''touristic structures''': there isn’t a continuous path networks on the banks, there aren’t refreshment areas or other structures that could improve the recreation adn leisure.

'''Climate conditions'''

Cavenago is 67 m s.l.m. and given the geographical context of the plain we can assure the climate is '''continental'''. During winter the temperature could reach the -3-5 Celsius degree, and could snow a bit/lot depends on the year. During summer (between June and September) the temperature could reach the 30-33 Celsius degrees. The coldest mouth is usually January and the hottest July and August. The main fact about climate conditions is the '''humidity level''', which is always high. In winter and autumn could be above the 60 -70 % and in summer too: this means a lot of fog during autumn and winter time and the mist presence during early morning in spring and summer time.
In the last two decades the rainiest months of the year were October and November with a monthly rainfall average of 93,3 mm and 113,7 mm. April and September were also quite rainy with a rainfall average of 79,4 mm and 78,2 mm.

'''Water''' is actually the main resource of the entire Pianura Padana in the south of Milan with rivers, canals, wetlands, irrigation ditches and ''fontanili'' . The '''water table''' is between 2,50 meter and 1,50 meter deep: if you dig a hole in the ground with your hands you could easily find water.
The site is placed in the '''lowest terrace along the river''' and has equal share or is few meters higher than the average water level of the river and is therefore floodable in flood periods. For this reason, the site '''soil''' is sands and silts, light , loose, fluffy , powdery, medium permeable, with a thin covering of humus.

Cavenago d’Adda has '''2234 inhabitants''' with a density of '''138,76 ab./km²''' in a territory of 16,1 km². The town is placed on a river platform at 73 m s.l.m. but the site is mainly at 60 m s.l.m.
The Pianura Padana region is defined by its '''highly developed and mechanized agriculture'''. The landscape is dominated by the rhythm of the rural productions, corn and forage for the milk cows, and by the presence of small towns, villages and isolated farms, some of them quite old. Each of these towns and villages has its own church and bell tower, so even when the corn reaches its maximum height, in the end of summer, you can easily orientate yourself looking for the nearest tower or church.

'''Agriculture'''

The agriculture system and the rural settlements
The municipality land is 57% occupied by herbaceous crops (cereals, rice, maize/corn and permanent grassland), and only the 9% by woodland areas, mainly along the river, and the 34% by inhabited land.
The mesh structure on which the agricultural organization is based, is recognizable thanks to the preservation of some trees rows, rural roads and canals maintained in its original state, throughout the years. These elements, with the farms scattered in the territory, represent the objects of the valorization and recovery, indicated by the regional plan, to preserve the original nature of the local landscape.
Next to the Adda river there is instead a complex image, characterized by an agricultural reality of high natural level consists predominantly of arable and permanent grassland fields, in addition to a physical natural system very articulate. Despite the strong vocation of the agricultural system, the employed population of Cavenago in the rural system was only the 5% in 2001. In fact , watching the farm buildings, they have a different use than the original function. Many farms still active, but not mainly agricultural engaged, are located within the South Adda Park.
The agricultural system and the environment of the park constitute the territorial identity of Cavenago d’Adda, but the trivialization of agricultural landscape due to the affirmation of intensive agriculture, has weakened, if not canceled, an image of an agricultural area made out of “green rooms”.

== Interesting fact about Krapinica river ==

Ignoring the natural values, visual quality and importance of the Krapinica river, led to devastation of river banks using concrete and construction on the very edge of the river. Physical changes in river flow and changes of speed water runoff are natural features of the ecosystem and the environment. So far, green river system of Krapinica river has been inadequately used, with impaired identity and visual quality. Existing green open areas in the Krapina city and their (dis)connection with the river Krapinica are becoming questionable.

== My perspective ==

This academic year I will get my Master’s degree in Landscape architecture at Department of Ornamental Plants, Landscape Architecture and Garden Art at University of Zagreb. I decided to engage in a new and useful work that could be of importance to mycolleagues in a similar and/or same profession and could also be useful for my hometown. That is why I am writing my thesis on Green Infrastructure in Krapina city. The bigger problem about green open spaces in rural/urban environment is how local authorities are trying to do the "right thing" with it, so I think this might be a good basis for future work on GI of Krapina City.

Krapina-Zagorje County is a county in northern Croatia. It encompasses most of the historic region called Hrvatsko Zagorje. The Krapina-Zagorje County is a candidate for being the most idyllic county in Croatia: the many villages and small towns spread out across the hillsides are perfect for agriculture (vineyards in particular) and summer houses.

The Krapina-Zagorje County borders on the Varaždin County in the northwest, Zagreb County in the southwest and southeast, and the city of Zagreb in the south.

Krapina is cultural, political and administrative centre of Krapina-Zagorje County and it is the largest region in Hrvatsko zagorje. It is located approximately 55 km (34 mi) from the Croatian capital city Zagreb. This is an area of many hills, rivers, creeks and lakes through many valleys.

''History''

Perhaps the most astonishing landmark of the area is the excavation site of a 125,000 year old Neanderthal man in caves near the central town.
The fact that Krapina is the political centre of the county has historical roots. Krapina County (comitatus crappinensis) was mentioned as early as 1222 in the 1222 charter of Duke Béla where prince Petar of Krapina was named the head of the Croatian noble parish (Petar “comes de Crapuna”). King Sigismund of Croatia and Hungary, who owned an estate in Krapina (Castrum Carpone), awarded the mayor of the town of Krapina the title of the Great Count of Zagorje County in 1399. During the administration of ban Ivan Drašković, five sessions of the Croatian Parliament were held in Krapina at the turn of the 17th century. Ante Starčević, the Father of the Nation, and bishop Juraj Strossmayer, signed political agreements in Krapina that defended Croatia’s interests.

''Culture''

Krapina is a home to yearly Festival kajkavske popevke (The festival of kajkavian song) sung in the local Kajkavian dialect.
At the site where the Neanderthals remains were discovered there is now a state of the art Neanderthal museum which also includes an extensive segment on evolution, making it one of the most interesting evolutionary museums in Europe. It is surrounded by a park with many statues of Neanderthals and their game, a bear, a moose and a beaver set in the actual locations.
There is also a nearby municipality of Krapinske Toplice (Krapina spa) with numerous thermal springs and spa tourist infrastructure.
Krapina is also the birthplace of the linguist and language reformer Ljudevit Gaj. His home is now a museum where visitors can learn about his life and work.

''Industry''

The main industrial branches are textiles and garments, production of housing containers and potassium stoves, Styrofoam, wiring supplies from plastic material, and construction industry specialized in the restoration of classical buildings with a large share of a craftsman works. A new business and trade centre will also be opening soon in Krapina; the town offers not only trade but also intellectual services, including marketing and project management firms, legal and financial services, medical and dental services, as well as many personal services such as hairdressing, pedicures, beauty salons, photography, photocopying shops, laundry services etc.

''Land use''

The area with in the Krapina city administrative borders has different purpose due to inter dependencies between urban and rural landscapes. This area has a mountainous and forested character, with Krapinica river flowing through its valley. Center of the town has a strong residential, public, social and cultural purpose, while the peripheral areas tend to be for individual housing, industry and agriculture.

''Terrain topography''

Krapina is the central, oldest and largest city in the Krapina-Zagorje County.
From the north side the city is protected by the Alpine mountain chain of Brezovica (581 m) and even higher Strahinjčica mountain (847 m), composed of lime stone and dolomite. From the South side of the city,a large clay alluvial plain opensupat a height of 120 meters above sea level. Hills stretch between the mountain range sand plain sea stand west of the river bed Krapinščica.

''Krapinica river''

Krapinica river, also called Krapinčica or Krapinščica flows through Krapina city. It is 35 kilometers long and springs from Macelj mountains. Krapinica is the right tributary of the river Krapina. Krapina River is 75 km long and belongs to the Black Sea basin. Confluence of Krapina has a total area of 1235 km2, springs from Ivanščica mountain and flows into the river Sava in Zaprešić.

== Analytical drawings ==

After reviewing the wide and narrow urban context of the Krapina - Zagorje County and the town of Krapina, the situation a long the Krapina river was also analyzed.

The active and passive traffic of Krapina city was also analyzed to better grasp the impacts of roads on the river.

In addition to traffic, views of the city (perspectives viewpoints) are another important element to analyze. This analysis gives knowledge of certainvist as that can be prioritized and some that are detected to be unattractive.

The analysis of the mobility along the Krapivnica riverside indicates some urban problems that occurred by the edge of the river.

Green infrastructure’s benefits can generally be classified into three large categories: social benefits, environmental benefits and economical benefits.

Krapinica river passes through urban and rural areas of Krapina city administrative boundaries. In the city center, which has an urban character, there are different urban elements and structures that have important cultural purposes. If those areas would get associated with the river, they would have more of a socialcomponent and importance and the social life could develop on entire river and not just in some small parts.

Krapinica river does not abound with fresh water because of a profound and extending riverbed which speeds up water flow through the city. During high rainfall season, it affects the groundwater and river water table. Restoring the river in more natural movement through the Krapina town would lead to groundwater levels maintained, rainwater retention, stormwater retained, stream flows stabilized.

Connecting the Krapina city and the wider surrounding area (with green corridors, biking and hiking trails) will lead to greater development of tourism. Combining the surrounding areas with facilities along on the Krapinica river can result in quality of place, recreation and leisure, tourism, land and biodiversity.

== Potential for multifunctionality ==

GI in Krapina city has a multi functional aspects of three main benefits: social, environment and economical. Typical multifunctional GI area in Krapina city has to be able to combine farming and forestry (from rural areas near by), housing ( in city and local area), tourism and recreational activities from rural area to center city areas and in city areas).

This multifunctional system has to connect local (rural) area near Krapina city with city and connect with river Krapinica. There is a strong relationship between city and local (rural) places in this multifunctional system. This will pride local economy, environment and people to connect with city for better prosperity and coexistence between rural and urban area.

== Projective drawings ==

* Changes that can be done in '''near future (in 1-2 years)''' are focused on Krapina city area. They can start with Krapina river, which should be returned into its more natural state then it is now. It can also include pedestrian and cycle routes, private and urban garden near river, school and children playgrounds, main square and streets.

* In the period of '''10 to 15 years''' GI is supposed to connect river Krapinica with other green areas in Krapina city and connect Krapina city with local rural areas and smaller towns near by. Agricultural land in peri-urban part of Krapina city has a huge value for people who live there (shipping food to local market). That also applies for rural areas outside the Krapina city administrative boundaries. Production from the land affects local and regional tourism, human health, land and biodiversity.

== Summary and conclusion ==

The river is an important spatial element; it play san important role in the landscape, especially in urban areas because it is the back bone of the city. It improves the microclimate and attracts beneficiaries and users. Through a historical overview we can clearly perceive its importance and role, sometimes defensive, religious and structural but more recently its cultural, social and ecological function.

Krapinica river makes an important green system of the Krapina city. It is necessary to preserve it and enrichment with different contents and structures to give users new activities with a strong focus on the benefits (social, economical and ecological) provided by green infrastructure.

Photo gallery shows new and old photographs and postcards of Krapina city. On the old postcards we can see the quantity and distribution of surrounding green areas in town and the way open space is being used. On today's photographs the quantity of green open areas is smaller and not used to its potential compared to the past use.

Krapina County (comitatus crappinensis) was mentioned as early as 1222 in the 1222 charter of Duke Béla where prince Petar of Krapina was named the head of the Croatian noble parish (Petar “comes de Crapuna”). King Sigismund of Croatia and Hungary, who owned an estate in Krapina (Castrum Carpone), awarded the mayor of the town of Krapina the title of the Great Count of Zagorje County in 1399. During the administration of ban Ivan Drašković, five sessions of the Croatian Parliament were held in Krapina at the turn of the 17th century. Ante Starčević, the Father of the Nation, and bishop Juraj Strossmayer, signed political agreements in Krapina that defended Croatia’s interests.

Krapina is a home to yearly Festival kajkavske popevke (The festival of kajkavian song) sung in the local Kajkavian dialect.
At the site where the Neanderthals remains were discovered there is now a state of the art Neanderthal museum which also includes an extensive segment on evolution, making it one of the most interesting evolutionary museums in Europe. It is surrounded by a park with many statues of Neanderthals and their game, a bear, a moose and a beaver set in the actual locations.
There is also a nearby municipality of Krapinske Toplice (Krapina spa) with numerous thermal springs and spa tourist infrastructure.
Krapina is also the birthplace of the linguist and language reformer Ljudevit Gaj. His home is now a museum where visitors can learn about his life and work.

The main industrial branches are textiles and garments, production of housing containers and potassium stoves, Styrofoam, wiring supplies from plastic material, and construction industry specialized in the restoration of classical buildings with a large share of a craftsman works. A new business and trade centre will also be opening soon in Krapina; the town offers not only trade but also intellectual services, including marketing and project management firms, legal and financial services, medical and dental services, as well as many personal services such as hairdressing, pedicures, beauty salons, photography, photocopying shops, laundry services etc.

The area with in the Krapina city administrative borders has different purpose due to inter dependencies between urban and rural landscapes. This area has a mountainous and forested character, with Krapinica river flowing through its valley. Center of the town has a strong residential, public, social and cultural purpose, while the peripheral areas tend to be for individual housing, industry and agriculture.

Krapina is the central, oldest and largest city in the Krapina-Zagorje County.
From the north side the city is protected by the Alpine mountain chain of Brezovica (581 m) and even higher Strahinjčica mountain (847 m), composed of lime stone and dolomite. From the South side of the city,a large clay alluvial plain opensupat a height of 120 meters above sea level. Hills stretch between the mountain range sand plain sea stand west of the river bed Krapinščica.

After reviewing the wide and narrow urban context of the Krapina - Zagorje County and the town of Krapina, the situation a long the Krapina river was also analyzed.

The active and passive traffic of Krapina city was also analyzed to better grasp the impacts of roads on the river.

In addition to traffic, views of the city (perspectives viewpoints) are another important element to analyze. This analysis gives knowledge of certainvist as that can be prioritized and some that are detected to be unattractive.

The analysis of the mobility along the Krapivnica riverside indicates some urban problems that occurred by the edge of the river.

== Summary and conclusion ==

The river is an important spatial element; it play san important role in the landscape, especially in urban areas because it is the back bone of the city. It improves the microclimate and attracts beneficiaries and users. Through a historical overview we can clearly perceive its importance and role, sometimes defensive, religious and structural but more recently its cultural, social and ecological function.

Krapinica river makes an important green system of the Krapina city. It is necessary to preserve it and enrichment with different contents and structures to give users new activities with a strong focus on the benefits (social, economical and ecological) provided by green infrastructure.

== Interesting fact about Krapinica river ==

Ignoring the natural values, visual quality and importance of the Krapinica river, led to devastation of river banks using concrete and construction on the very edge of the river. Physical changes in river flow and changes of speed water runoff are natural features of the ecosystem and the environment. So far, green river system of Krapinica river has been inadequately used, with impaired identity and visual quality. Existing green open areas in the Krapina city and their (dis)connection with the river Krapinica are becoming questionable.

== My perspective ==

This academic year I will get my Master’s degree in Landscape architecture at Department of Ornamental Plants, Landscape Architecture and Garden Art at University of Zagreb. I decided to engage in a new and useful work that could be of importance to mycolleagues in a similar and/or same profession and could also be useful for my hometown. That is why I am writing my thesis on Green Infrastructure in Krapina city. The bigger problem about green open spaces in rural/urban environment is how local authorities are trying to do the "right thing" with it, so I think this might be a good basis for future work on GI of Krapina City.

After reviewing the wide and narrow urban context of the Krapina - Zagorje County and the town of Krapina, the situation a long the Krapina river was also analyzed.

The active and passive traffic of Krapina city was also analyzed to better grasp the impacts of roads on the river.

In addition to traffic, views of the city (perspectives viewpoints) are another important element to analyze. This analysis gives knowledge of certainvist as that can be prioritized and some that are detected to be unattractive.

The analysis of the mobility along the Krapivnica riverside indicates some urban problems that occurred by the edge of the river.

== Summary and conclusion ==

The river is an important spatial element; it play san important role in the landscape, especially in urban areas because it is the back bone of the city. It improves the microclimate and attracts beneficiaries and users. Through a historical overview we can clearly perceive its importance and role, sometimes defensive, religious and structural but more recently its cultural, social and ecological function.

Krapinica river makes an important green system of the Krapina city. It is necessary to preserve it and enrichment with different contents and structures to give users new activities with a strong focus on the benefits (social, economical and ecological) provided by green infrastructure.

== Interesting fact about Krapinica river ==

Ignoring the natural values, visual quality and importance of the Krapinica river, led to devastation of river banks using concrete and construction on the very edge of the river. Physical changes in river flow and changes of speed water runoff are natural features of the ecosystem and the environment. So far, green river system of Krapinica river has been inadequately used, with impaired identity and visual quality. Existing green open areas in the Krapina city and their (dis)connection with the river Krapinica are becoming questionable.

== My perspective ==

This academic year I will get my Master’s degree in Landscape architecture at Department of Ornamental Plants, Landscape Architecture and Garden Art at University of Zagreb. I decided to engage in a new and useful work that could be of importance to mycolleagues in a similar and/or same profession and could also be useful for my hometown. That is why I am writing my thesis on Green Infrastructure in Krapina city. The bigger problem about green open spaces in rural/urban environment is how local authorities are trying to do the "right thing" with it, so I think this might be a good basis for future work on GI of Krapina City.

King Sigismund of Croatia and Hungary, who owned an estate in Krapina (Castrum Carpone), awarded the mayor of the town of Krapina the title of the Great Count of Zagorje County in 1399. During the administration of ban Ivan Drašković, five sessions of the Croatian Parliament were held in Krapina at the turn of the 17th century. == Interesting fact about Krapinica river ==

Ignoring the natural values, visual quality and importance of the Krapinica river, led to devastation of river banks using concrete and construction on the very edge of the river. Physical changes in river flow and changes of speed water runoff are natural features of the ecosystem and the environment. So far, green river system of Krapinica river has been inadequately used, with impaired identity and visual quality. Existing green open areas in the Krapina city and their (dis)connection with the river Krapinica are becoming questionable.

== My perspective ==

This academic year I will get my Master’s degree in Landscape architecture at Department of Ornamental Plants, Landscape Architecture and Garden Art at University of Zagreb. I decided to engage in a new and useful work that could be of importance to mycolleagues in a similar and/or same profession and could also be useful for my hometown. That is why I am writing my thesis on Green Infrastructure in Krapina city. The bigger problem about green open spaces in rural/urban environment is how local authorities are trying to do the "right thing" with it, so I think this might be a good basis for future work on GI of Krapina City.

King Sigismund of Croatia and Hungary, who owned an estate in Krapina (Castrum Carpone), awarded the mayor of the town of Krapina the title of the Great Count of Zagorje County in 1399. During the administration of ban Ivan Drašković, five sessions of the Croatian Parliament were held in Krapina at the turn of the 17th century. Ante Starčević, the Father of the Nation, and bishop Juraj Strossmayer, signed political agreements in Krapina that defended Croatia’s interests.

Krapina is a home to yearly Festival kajkavske popevke (The festival of kajkavian song) sung in the local Kajkavian dialect.
At the site where the Neanderthals remains were discovered there is now a state of the art Neanderthal museum which also includes an extensive segment on evolution, making it one of the most interesting evolutionary museums in Europe. It is surrounded by a park with many statues of Neanderthals and their game, a bear, a moose and a beaver set in the actual locations.
There is also a nearby municipality of Krapinske Toplice (Krapina spa) with numerous thermal springs and spa tourist infrastructure.
Krapina is also the birthplace of the linguist and language reformer Ljudevit Gaj. His home is now a museum where visitors can learn about his life and work.

The main industrial branches are textiles and garments, production of housing containers and potassium stoves, Styrofoam, wiring supplies from plastic material, and construction industry specialized in the restoration of classical buildings with a large share of a craftsman works. After reviewing the wide and narrow urban context of the Krapina - Zagorje County and the town of Krapina, the situation a long the Krapina river was also analyzed.
The active and passive traffic of Krapina city was also analyzed to better grasp the impacts of roads on the river. In addition to traffic, views of the city (perspectives viewpoints) are another important element to analyze. This analysis gives knowledge of certainvist as that can be prioritized and some that are detected to be unattractive. The analysis of the mobility along the Krapivnica riverside indicates some urban problems that occurred by the edge of the river.

== Interesting fact about Krapinica river ==

Ignoring the natural values, visual quality and importance of the Krapinica river, led to devastation of river banks using concrete and construction on the very edge of the river. Physical changes in river flow and changes of speed water runoff are natural features of the ecosystem and the environment. So far, green river system of Krapinica river has been inadequately used, with impaired identity and visual quality. Existing green open areas in the Krapina city and their (dis)connection with the river Krapinica are becoming questionable.

== My perspective ==

This academic year I will get my Master’s degree in Landscape architecture at Department of Ornamental Plants, Landscape Architecture and Garden Art at University of Zagreb. I decided to engage in a new and useful work that could be of importance to mycolleagues in a similar and/or same profession and could also be useful for my hometown. That is why I am writing my thesis on Green Infrastructure in Krapina city. The bigger problem about green open spaces in rural/urban environment is how local authorities are trying to do the "right thing" with it, so I think this might be a good basis for future work on GI of Krapina City.

Perhaps the most astonishing landmark of the area is the excavation site of a 125,000 year old Neanderthal man in caves near the central town.
The fact that Krapina is the political centre of the county has historical roots. Krapina County (comitatus crappinensis) was mentioned as early as 1222 in the 1222 charter of Duke Béla where prince Petar of Krapina was named the head of the Croatian noble parish (Petar “comes de Crapuna”). King Sigismund of Croatia and Hungary, who owned an estate in Krapina (Castrum Carpone), awarded the mayor of the town of Krapina the title of the Great Count of Zagorje County in 1399. Krapina is a home to yearly Festival kajkavske popevke (The festival of kajkavian song) sung in the local Kajkavian dialect.
At the site where the Neanderthals remains were discovered there is now a state of the art Neanderthal museum which also includes an extensive segment on evolution, making it one of the most interesting evolutionary museums in Europe. It is surrounded by a park with many statues of Neanderthals and their game, a bear, a moose and a beaver set in the actual locations.
There is also a nearby municipality of Krapinske Toplice (Krapina spa) with numerous thermal springs and spa tourist infrastructure.
Krapina is also the birthplace of the linguist and language reformer Ljudevit Gaj. His home is now a museum where visitors can learn about his life and work.

Ignoring the natural values, visual quality and importance of the Krapinica river, led to devastation of river banks using concrete and construction on the very edge of the river. Physical changes in river flow and changes of speed water runoff are natural features of the ecosystem and the environment. So far, green river system of Krapinica river has been inadequately used, with impaired identity and visual quality. Existing green open areas in the Krapina city and their (dis)connection with the river Krapinica are becoming questionable.

== My perspective ==

This academic year I will get my Master’s degree in Landscape architecture at Department of Ornamental Plants, Landscape Architecture and Garden Art at University of Zagreb. I decided to engage in a new and useful work that could be of importance to mycolleagues in a similar and/or same profession and could also be useful for my hometown. That is why I am writing my thesis on Green Infrastructure in Krapina city. The bigger problem about green open spaces in rural/urban environment is how local authorities are trying to do the "right thing" with it, so I think this might be a good basis for future work on GI of Krapina City.

== Interesting fact about Krapinica river ==

Ignoring the natural values, visual quality and importance of the Krapinica river, led to devastation of river banks using concrete and construction on the very edge of the river. Physical changes in river flow and changes of speed water runoff are natural features of the ecosystem and the environment. So far, green river system of Krapinica river has been inadequately used, with impaired identity and visual quality. Existing green open areas in the Krapina city and their (dis)connection with the river Krapinica are becoming questionable.

== My perspective ==

This academic year I will get my Master’s degree in Landscape architecture at Department of Ornamental Plants, Landscape Architecture and Garden Art at University of Zagreb. I decided to engage in a new and useful work that could be of importance to mycolleagues in a similar and/or same profession and could also be useful for my hometown. That is why I am writing my thesis on Green Infrastructure in Krapina city. The bigger problem about green open spaces in rural/urban environment is how local authorities are trying to do the "right thing" with it, so I think this might be a good basis for future work on GI of Krapina City.

Krapina County (comitatus crappinensis) was mentioned as early as 1222 in the 1222 charter of Duke Béla where prince Petar of Krapina was named the head of the Croatian noble parish (Petar “comes de Crapuna”). King Sigismund of Croatia and Hungary, who owned an estate in Krapina (Castrum Carpone), awarded the mayor of the town of Krapina the title of the Great Count of Zagorje County in 1399. During the administration of ban Ivan Drašković, five sessions of the Croatian Parliament were held in Krapina at the turn of the 17th century. Ante Starčević, the Father of the Nation, and bishop Juraj Strossmayer, signed political agreements in Krapina that defended Croatia’s interests.

Krapina is a home to yearly Festival kajkavske popevke (The festival of kajkavian song) sung in the local Kajkavian dialect.
At the site where the Neanderthals remains were discovered there is now a state of the art Neanderthal museum which also includes an extensive segment on evolution, making it one of the most interesting evolutionary museums in Europe. It is surrounded by a park with many statues of Neanderthals and their game, a bear, a moose and a beaver set in the actual locations.
There is also a nearby municipality of Krapinske Toplice (Krapina spa) with numerous thermal springs and spa tourist infrastructure.
Krapina is also the birthplace of the linguist and language reformer Ljudevit Gaj. His home is now a museum where visitors can learn about his life and work.

The main industrial branches are textiles and garments, production of housing containers and potassium stoves, Styrofoam, wiring supplies from plastic material, and construction industry specialized in the restoration of classical buildings with a large share of a craftsman works. == Interesting fact about Krapinica river ==

Ignoring the natural values, visual quality and importance of the Krapinica river, led to devastation of river banks using concrete and construction on the very edge of the river. Physical changes in river flow and changes of speed water runoff are natural features of the ecosystem and the environment. So far, green river system of Krapinica river has been inadequately used, with impaired identity and visual quality. Existing green open areas in the Krapina city and their (dis)connection with the river Krapinica are becoming questionable.

== My perspective ==

This academic year I will get my Master’s degree in Landscape architecture at Department of Ornamental Plants, Landscape Architecture and Garden Art at University of Zagreb. I decided to engage in a new and useful work that could be of importance to mycolleagues in a similar and/or same profession and could also be useful for my hometown. That is why I am writing my thesis on Green Infrastructure in Krapina city. The bigger problem about green open spaces in rural/urban environment is how local authorities are trying to do the "right thing" with it, so I think this might be a good basis for future work on GI of Krapina City.

Krapina is cultural, political and administrative centre of Krapina-Zagorje County and it is the largest region in Hrvatsko zagorje. It is located approximately 55 km (34 mi) from the Croatian capital city Zagreb. This is an area of many hills, rivers, creeks and lakes through many valleys.

Perhaps the most astonishing landmark of the area is the excavation site of a 125,000 year old Neanderthal man in caves near the central town.
The fact that Krapina is the political centre of the county has historical roots. Krapina County (comitatus crappinensis) was mentioned as early as 1222 in the 1222 charter of Duke Béla where prince Petar of Krapina was named the head of the Croatian noble parish (Petar “comes de Crapuna”). King Sigismund of Croatia and Hungary, who owned an estate in Krapina (Castrum Carpone), awarded the mayor of the town of Krapina the title of the Great Count of Zagorje County in 1399. During the administration of ban Ivan Drašković, five sessions of the Croatian Parliament were held in Krapina at the turn of the 17th century. Ante Starčević, the Father of the Nation, and bishop Juraj Strossmayer, signed political agreements in Krapina that defended Croatia’s interests.

''Culture''

Krapina is a home to yearly Festival kajkavske popevke (The festival of kajkavian song) sung in the local Kajkavian dialect.
At the site where the Neanderthals remains were discovered there is now a state of the art Neanderthal museum which also includes an extensive segment on evolution, making it one of the most interesting evolutionary museums in Europe. It is surrounded by a park with many statues of Neanderthals and their game, a bear, a moose and a beaver set in the actual locations.
There is also a nearby municipality of Krapinske Toplice (Krapina spa) with numerous thermal springs and spa tourist infrastructure.
Krapina is also the birthplace of the linguist and language reformer Ljudevit Gaj. His home is now a museum where visitors can learn about his life and work.

''Industry''

The main industrial branches are textiles and garments, production of housing containers and potassium stoves, Styrofoam, wiring supplies from plastic material, and construction industry specialized in the restoration of classical buildings with a large share of a craftsman works. A new business and trade centre will also be opening soon in Krapina; the town offers not only trade but also intellectual services, including marketing and project management firms, legal and financial services, medical and dental services, as well as many personal services such as hairdressing, pedicures, beauty salons, photography, photocopying shops, laundry services etc.
