== Landscape and/or urban context of your case ==

*'''Biogeography'''
Câmpulung Muscel is a city formed on both sides of the Târgului River. It's placed at the Sub-Carphatian Mountains. This region was early valued by it's inhabitant, the city growing to be an important econoical center. Here you can find forests, meadows, good rock for expoitation and good soil for growing vegetables. The river is crossing the city on 7.4 km long way, from North-Est to Suth -West.The city is placed at around 600m above sea level. You can find plants like ''Carpinus betulus, Populus termula, Betula verrucosa, Corylus avellana, Cornus mas, Craetegus monogyna, Rosa cannina, Sambucus nigra, Alnus glutinosa, Salix fragilis, Agrostis , Festuca rubra,''

*'''Cultural features'''
The city has a strong cultural background. It can be found alot of relics about the Romanian culture. The soroundings are also rich in culture and history from ancient ruins to beautifull arhitectural monuments. The city can be found in alot of writings from respected Romanian writers. In modern times, the city lost a little of it's charming, romantic features due to the lack of maintenance works. There is no strategy tourism-wie, so if people want to find the places that talk about the beautiful history and culture of the places, they will have difficultes in finding these places. '''The Târgului river''' is framed on both sides by houses and railroad. The animals from the households are living freely on the river shore. People are only passing by and they don't have activities related to the river. There is no pathway in the area, the vegetation grows freely keeping the people that are passing by on the path near the households.

*'''Overall character'''
Câmpulung Muscel has an impressive built and historical heritage, very diverse and nationally and internationally acknowledged. Approches on reabilitation and recovery of the sites has been given more attention in the last few years. The city has evolved due to it's rich heritage and resourses but sadly it's started to be forgotten in the last decades that lead to it's decay. The landscape, natural values, the tradition should support the future development.

'''History and dynamics'''
Câmpulung Muscel was the first Capital of Romanian Country, from the will of the ruler Basarab the First. The sub-carpathian mountains zone where the city is placed gave great circumstances for the city to evolve and become an impotant economical city. Few decades ago, people used the river site as a recreational area. They were going to take baths in it, the place had a strong social character. The river changed the most when it was constructed a dam up the river..the building have grow in number closer to the river, he acces to the water was destroyed and the river's course has decreased. This was an important artificial intervention that chaned the river completly. The peoples link to the river was cut down and the wildness of the vegetation took its course.

*'''Present issues'''
There are some discussions in the town hall about development of the city, and the river is one of the subjects. The mayor spoke at a workshop in the summer of 2013 about redesigning the river site. Some ideas were about high waterfalls made by man to have more dynamicy, alot of terraces and decks so people can get closer to the river. They are not working with any Landscape Architects just with the town's Architect who says she had some courses of Landscape Architecture, who redesigned some of the parks from the city in a debatable fashion. In this context, the river is at the danger to be dramatically changed and lose its distinctive look and the potential of raising value of the site can be lost.

== Our design objectives ==

Our collaborative design will put forward '''best fit suggestions to help the municipality''', proposing a '''development strategy based on a documentation on the urban context of the river'''. We want to '''give examples''' of good practices and ways of redesigning the river that are '''functional,non-aggressive and sustainable.'''
From our first project discussions we realized the importance of '''involveing local people''', right from the onset of the project. In order to bring back a sense of pride for the river, and get people spending time there again; essentially local people would make a brief for the space, telling us what is really needed.
The objectives raised from this brief are likely to involve '''opening up access to the river,''' and '''creating a range of improved spaces using vegetation''' allowing for a variety of activities, children's play, swimming and bathing, animal watching etc
We would also suggest '''implementations in stages''', so that attention and interest in the river could be built up again, and perhaps to start work where the river meets the city center, and work outwards.

== Analytical drawings ==
''Please add four analytical sketches/drawings (or montages/schemes) of your case. Every group member needs to contribute at least one drawing.''

Image:finalup.jpg|urban context
Image:Beccapanorama.png|Key Point! This area along the river has the potential to be a great meeting point. Ideas have been put forward to turn the old swimming baths in to an architectural school. The combined improvement of this space and the river corridor might being students in to the area, improving a green space that connects with the river and the train line. Trains along the line are slow and infrequent.
== Projective drawings ==
''These projective drawings and sketches show our collective ideas for improvements to the river, sometimes there are sketches explaining structural hard landscape elements, however the emphasis in on planting design/vegetation aspects.''
== Case Studies==
Group discussion lead to us thinking about case studies and instances of successfully designed landscapes that has a similar concept to ours.

<gallery caption="Design Synthesis Drawings" widths="150px" heights="150px" perrow="4">
File:Ribbon2.png| We found this landscape by ''Turnscape'' reflects our overall concept of design a planting scheme which gave people the opportunity to walk alongside the river, taking a journey. We have three ribbons, the river, and railway and a pathway amongst the vegetation. <http://www.archdaily.com/445661/red-ribbon-park-turenscape/>
File:Ribbon1.png|This landscape uses a very bold element of the red "ribbon," running alongside the river. We would not need such a bold fixed element, but the concept is helpful. <http://www.archdaily.com/445661/red-ribbon-park-turenscape/>
</gallery>

== Design Synthesis ==
''Please analyse the individual approaches presented so far and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses (you may use the [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SWOT_analysis SWOT]analysis model). Try to create a synthesis and represent it with a plan and some sketches. You can still use drawings/sketches.''

== Our design objectives ==

== Analytical drawings ==
== Case Studies==
Group discussion lead to us thinking about case studies and instances of successfully designed landscapes that has a similar concept to ours.

<gallery caption="Design Synthesis Drawings" widths="150px" heights="150px" perrow="4">

'''CASE A: Gerdab (Gerdab-e Ben, the Ben lagoon) گرداب بِن by Majid Amani Beni'''

''Radu - absent for the pressentation,(feedback based on wiki page) :'' The author pressented an interesting case study that I hadn't any knowledge before. I enjoyed learning about this site. The case was well documented from the cultural point of view but lacks in information about climate and plant species that are relevant for me to fully understand the site characteristics. The analytic drawings demonstrate author's approch in a macro fashion. This could be a good way to undertand the site context but I think he should be more interested in detailed view on the site, too. He didn't upload any projective drawings but from analyzing the analytic drawings I can say that the author want to have a continous tree line and better realtion between the site and soroundings. In my opinion I would try to show more the unicity of the place by treating the site as an oasis in the context of lack of green areas. The lagoon have the potentiol to be highlated because of the plants that are there that seems to be in contrast with soroundings, and this asspects can be more valuable then integrate the site more fluently with the soroundings. This way it can become a interesting site from tourism point o view and a landmark for the region. I encorouge the author to keep documenting about this place because it's an interesting one and should be given more attention from the community.

''Rebecca:''
Analytical drawing 4 is the most helpful diagram, which visually explains the problems of the site. It brought up a few questions in my head such as: is there a mix of species of the trees? It seems that the lagoon is mostly for human recreation, perhaps you could suggest also lower level planting, which might also provide new more enclosed spaces for people to relax in? As Radu mentioned, seeing the site as an 'oasis,' is something you could really run with.
You were saying one negative point was that there is no green space between the city and the lagoon. It is a really great idea to connect the city to the lagoon via a green route. I believe this would be a good way to encourage people to go to the lagoon, and also, to walk or ride a bike there. However! How easy would it be to do this in the climate? What is the climate?! I saw in one of your pictures near by some irrigated planting site, presumably agricultural food produce. If a planting design would need irrigation, this is another problem you should bring up. It would be interesting to know what animals insects you might find there? I noticed that the edge of the lagoon is a concrete edge, which is not ecologically great; it is better to have sloping slightly vegetated banks. If there is any trailing native plant species, this is a easy/cheap way to connect the water to the land for nature. I come from a place where it rains constantly, with lots of birds, so I apologies if the above things I have said are not helpful, again this is why it would be helpful to have more more information about climate/nature. Otherwise I enjoyed learning about this place which is so different to what many of us are used to.

''John:'' I found it very interesting to read about the connection between greenery and tourism. This is a topic that swedish research would like to know more about but at the moment information is rather scarce here. Is it believed that an ecological approach to planting design reduce maintenance because nature handles itself more? It was almost but not perfectly clear, I guess this is a common conception anyhow.
The seasonal approach in the analytical drawings was helpful.
I agree with Rebecca that analytical drawing no. 4 was really helpful in explaining the current situation, I also liked the projective drawing no. 4 out of the same reason. I would like more landscape archiects to use these tilted aerial photos.
A scale measurement or scale bar would have been useful in the analytical plan

'''CASE B: Park Angiolina by Leon Plahuta'''

''Radu - absent for the pressentation,(feedback based on wiki page) :'' The author did a complete and very good documentation about his chosen case study. Park Angiolina is world known for its flower borders. I enjoyed reading about whole site and learning important facts about its culture and landscape. The documentation he's done, made a very clear idea about the site and its context. I enjoyed that the author raised some questions and issues about law when it comes to protected areas and how green spaces are degrating in time or how can we conserve the site. This questions can lead to an intersting discussion and raise awerness on this important issues. Even though the author admits his subjectivity on the case he presented very relevant information on the site. The analytic drawings are very well done with clear information that puts firmly the site in the urban context and showing the good and bad parts that can imediatly lead to proposals. After this good documentation and analyzing of the site the proposals came naturally. I like the author's perspective on non aggresive interventions that do not change the site characteristics but improve its value through punctual functional proposals that are developing the area of the park.

''Rebecca:''
There is a lot of passion in this project, which is really great to see, this landscapes cultural and social background is highlighted in a lot of ways and I believe it is really successful for gaining an insight in to the landscape. The analytical drawings are really successful; I found the one, which analyses characteristic views particularly interesting and it was possible to get a real feel for the site without ever having visited. You mention that to some people, might find your ideas farfetched. However It also seems by what you have said, that some areas of the park are undergoing rapid change. It might be possible to talk about the changes you want to see in then next fifteen year come in stages. What could you do in 5 years…and what could you do 5 years after that? Also in terms of the structure of writing it would be helpful to have more subtitles. All in all a very interesting and enjoyable piece.

'''CASE C: MFO-Park by Carolina Esteves Flores'''

''Radu - absent for the pressentation,(feedback based on wiki page) :'' The author presented an interesting case that is meant to show good practices in using an old industrial area and transforming it in a useble, recreational park through planting design. The architects that designed the site used climbers to cover the metal bars from the site. This gave a distinctive look that quickly became a landmark of the city. The documentation is well done, making clear about the context and the plants that are used. One of the most important facts about this case is that they used a high variability of plant species so the changing of the seansons can realy change the perspectives on the site through the changing colors of the flowers and foliage. The author highlights the importance of using season changing in your advantage through planting design. The analytic drawings make a clear idea about the context of the site and shows the author's main issue on using plants that give distinct feelings in different seasons. The projective drawings are demonstrating the positive example of "bringing to life old industrial non functional areas", through planting design. The human intervention should only start the natural way of vegetation invading not usable space and creating a very unique site.

''Rebecca:''
In a way the author chose a difficult site to analyse, because, as she mentions there is not likely to be massive changes to the landscape in the next few years and so projective drawings are difficult. For a lot of people our natural surroundings we do not nessisarily want to change in a big way, only manage. So, I really liked how she brought across the idea of "nature taking over," it is certainly something we are seeing a lot in recent landscape architecture, where our industrial heritage meets a kind of nature hegemony. I have been interested in this site for a while and so it was thought-provoking to get a local perspective on this landscape.
I would be interested to know how tourists and local people use this space, do people walk through and leave, or is it somewhere that people feel comfortable spending time? As Radu says it is good that the author has highlighted seasonal change. I was wondering how dynamic the place could feel so was really helpful to get a full list of plants.

== Rationale: From obstacle to asset ==
For many years the river Fyris, that passes through downtown Uppsala, was seen as an obstacle that had to be overcome. Since the early 2000s this view has gone through a change and the river has become more of an asset to the municipality. This has been manifested with a series of new rooms around the river meant for public outdoor life in the central parts of town as well as a larger vision with the river being a gate into the natural landscape that surrounds Uppsala. The work with the River Room has only begun and there will be a lot of questions to answer politcally, technically and design-wise in the upcoming decades for the city of Uppsala. The potential is clear and the first improvements have been nationally recognised in Sweden as Best Practice. Personally I spend time around this river every week in both its urban and rural/natural setting.

== Author's perspective ==
My professional background is as a young Landscape Architect doing my MSc education at the moment. Earlier I was working as a media and communications consultant specialised on Landscape topics. This case is therefore interesting to me both from an ecological/social point of view as well as a case of the need for environmental communication.

== Landscape and/or urban context of your case ==
'''Geography'''
The municipality has got around 200,000 inhabitants which makes it the 4th largest city of Sweden.
The city is situated on the fertile plains of Uppsala and the landscape is much affected by the glacial and post-glacial period. There are close to 100m thick layers of glacial and post-glacial clay right in the city centre where also the Fyris River runs in a sink. Just beside the river rins the glacial ridge “Uppsalaåsen” where the castle of Uppsala is located.

'''The Fyris River'''
The Fyris river is the longest river of Uppland county, Sweden and runs straigth through the main city of Uppsala (200,000 inhabitants). The run off area is 1990 km² and the river is used as a source of drinking water for the city of Uppsala. Water is pumped from a nearby lake, Tämnaren, into the Fyris river. Downstream it is pumped up onto the glacial ridge, Uppsalaåsen, just north of town where the water can infiltrate, purify and be pumped up again as ground water in town.
The Fyris river runs out in the lake Mälaren which is the southern bounds of the city of Uppsala.

'''History'''
Uppsala is one of the oldest towns of Sweden. Since almost one thousand years it has been a religious, political as well as economical power hub. The oldest university of Scandinavia is located in the city and it is the hometown of Carl von Linné. The city has always been shaped by academia, the Dome Church (seat of the archidiocese of Sweden) as well its proximity to Stockholm.

'''Climate and location'''
Uppsala is located very close to the 60th parallel north and has got a rather humid climate on the brink of being sub-arctic with cold winters and mild summers. During summer solstice there is more than 18 hours of visible sunshine whereas during the winter solstice it is merly under six hours.
The average yealy temperature is around 5°C with an average of -4°C in february (coldest) and 16°C in july (warmest). Record high temperature is 38°C (1933) and the record low -39.5°C (1875).
The average yearly precipitation was 537 mm/year between 1961-1990.
== Summary and conclusion ==
The Green River Path of Uppsala has been acknowledged as a resource for the whole city since almost a decade. The question for the future is now how to manage this resource. Downtown the answer has been quite clear: better access to the river room with lots of space for pedestrians, places to sit and activities to take part. One part of the renewal won the “Siena price” as best landscape architecture in Sweden 2005 with the project “Östra ågatan”. When it comes to the more natural and green landscape along the Green River Path there has been a political stalemate within the municipality. One majority is in favour of protecting more or less the whole area hindering further development. The other side would like to give rather generous possibilities to external developers and real estate companies. Neither approach is reasonable if all the values of the area are to be considered. There has to be a lot of ecological sensitivity as well as perception of how to further increase the value of use. Many parts are today rather inaccessible and not conceived as secure for people in general. At first I consider these qualities to be of highest priority for communicational as well as practical causes.

== Author's perspective ==

== Summary and conclusion ==

== Author's perspective ==

== Summary and conclusion ==

My professional background is as a young Landscape Architect doing my MSc education at the moment. Earlier I was working as a media and communications consultant specialised on Landscape topics. This case is therefore interesting to me both from an ecological/social point of view as well as a case of the need for environmental communication.
== Summary and conclusion ==

== Author's perspective ==
My professional background is as a young Landscape Architect doing my MSc education at the moment. Earlier I was working as a media and communications consultant specialised on Landscape topics. This case is therefore interesting to me both from an ecological/social point of view as well as a case of the need for environmental communication.
** ''How would you like this case to change in the near future? (in 1-2 years)''
** ''And how could it look like in 10-15 years?''

== Summary and conclusion ==
The Green River Path of Uppsala has been acknowledged as a resource for the whole city since almost a decade. The question for the future is now how to manage this resource. Downtown the answer has been quite clear: better access to the river room with lots of space for pedestrians, places to sit and activities to take part. One part of the renewal won the “Siena price” as best landscape architecture in Sweden 2005 with the project “Östra ågatan” [http://www.arkitekt.se/s17193].
