== Short Introduction to the Area of Study ==
The site is located in the North of India, at the foothills of Himalayas. It’s a small village (25 families and 150 inhabitants) which is sandwiched between a reserve forest and a growing city (Dehradun).

I chose this area for this seminar as it is my thesis site. Currently because of eccentric developments of cities, villages, especially those which are on the fringes are facing lots of challenges and development pressures. My effort would be in providing direction to the transformation (with community participation) which should result in a sustainable, self sufficient and economically viable model.
So far I have conducted three public meetings in which I organized workshops to help the villagers appreciate the landscape around them. A particular meeting focussed on landscape needs analysis allowed me to develop a fresh perspective on the topic.

== Exercise 1: Sketching the Landscape ==

'''Time frame: October 25 - November 15, 2011'''
'''''Student activities:'''''
* Creation of analytical drawings and sketches
* Presentation of results
== Exercise 2: Landscape Layers ==

'''Time frame: November 15 - 29, 2011'''
*time based changes and 'landscape biography', and/or:
*Description of this character.
== Exercise 3: Behaviour Patterns ==

'''Time frame: December 6 - 20, 2011'''
* How do people behave in this area? How do they use the space? What is important for them?
* Observation of study area, interviews with local people and mapping of use patterns.
There are already several personal interviews and public meetings conducted so far by me. Interesting thing is because of proximity to the city and forest, young generation is giving up on agriculture. So most of the agriculture land is lying unused and undefined. There is no public space as such for different user group. Only area which comes under religious use having temple is being used by different user group at different time of day. It is interesting to see that there is no formal discussion on how and when different groups should use the area, there is a common understanding between the villagers which avoids conflicts between different user groups.
It is sad to see that once developed just because of agriculture reasons, now there are only few people in their fifties or sixties who are doing farming. There are very many reasons for that which I would like to discuss more for my further studies.
* Preparation of short presentation

<gallery caption=" " widths="150px" heights="150px" perrow="5">

'''Time frame: December 19, 2011 - January 17, 2012'''
* Based on the different landscape assessment approaches students will develop a communication concept for their area of study
* Which measures would be necessary for enhancing the awareness for the area?
* Students are free to choose their method.

== Exercise 1: Sketching the Landscape ==
== Exercise 2: Landscape Layers ==

'''Time frame: November 15 - 29, 2011'''
*time based changes and 'landscape biography', and/or:
*Description of this character.
== Exercise 3: Behaviour Patterns ==

* Preparation of short presentation

<gallery caption=" " widths="150px" heights="150px" perrow="5">
'''Time frame: December 19, 2011 - January 17, 2012'''
* Based on the different landscape assessment approaches students will develop a communication concept for their area of study
* Which measures would be necessary for enhancing the awareness for the area?
* Students are free to choose their method.

== Exercise 1: Sketching the Landscape ==
== Exercise 3: Behaviour Patterns ==

* Preparation of short presentation

<gallery caption=" " widths="150px" heights="150px" perrow="5">
* Which measures would be necessary for enhancing the awareness for the area?
* Students are free to choose their method.

== Exercise 1: Sketching the Landscape ==

'''Time frame: October 25 - November 15, 2011'''

'''''Student activities:'''''
* Creation of analytical drawings and sketches
* Presentation of results

''Please upload a selection of your drawings/sketches/mental maps and add them to the image gallery''

Dear Archana,

This area makes me really curious. Your drawing with the uses of men, women and children is very good, I hope you can develop this method further also for other places in this village. It shows a lot - in a planning sense - but is also well understandable for lay people.

The use map rises some questions to me: what is 'undefined' space - are they not used? Temporarily? Cows eating? Children playing? What happens in the 'common' place - is it agricultural land used by everybody? In German this would be called 'Allmende'. How is the boundary between the religious site and its surroundings defined - is it more an invisible boundary (in people's minds) or is it spatial?

Are the woodlands used by people as you say this is a reserve?

Well, this is rather a set of questions than a comment -

Best wishes, Ellen

Archana: It is good that you liked the drawing.I think I would like to use this in behavior mapping. Regarding your questions I would like to answer them one by one but some how its interconnected

'''1)''' The areas which I mentioned in map as undefined is the current use of land. These are the land pieces belong to villagers. Initially its function was agriculture land, may be on papers its still a agricultural land. But as this village is on the fringe of city, and young generation is moving to city for job, these are the areas which are just lying ideally there with no function at all. There is no defined cattle in villages so no grazing as such. Children are not allowed to play there as it is a private property....so no current function just a piece of land with undefined function.

'''2)''' Common place or area is the land which belongs to gram panchayat (village governing body). It can be used by anyone with some formalities. Initially this area was a water body where water from rain was collected and used for irrigation purpose. But due to unplanned construction now this catchment area is dry for almost all the time.

'''3)''' Religious land belongs to one villager which he donated, but on papers its still his land. So its more of a agreement on social level. Its boundary is defined by wired fencing.It can be used by any one anytime...

'''4)''' Reserve forest in India is generally forest which comes under forest authority of India. Entering in it after certain limit is prohibited. Initially for fuel villagers used to go inside and collect woods but now a day because of proximity to city and availability of gas its kind of very minimum. There are certain conflicts between forest authority and villagers also man -animal conflict as there is no barricade between village and forest which is a matter of concern. Which I would like to reflect further as well in my thesis.

Thanks. If there are any other questions please let me know.

1) The areas which I mentioned in map as undefined is the current use of land.
2)Common place or area is the land which belongs to gram panchayat (village governing body). It can be used by anyone with some formalities. Initially this area was a water body where water from rain was collected and used for irrigation purpose. But due to unplanned construction now this catchment area is dry for almost all the time.
3)Religious land belongs to one villager which he donated, but on papers its still his land. So its more of a agreement on social level. Its boundary is defined by wired fencing.It can be used by any one anytime...
4)Reserve forest in India is generally forest which comes under forest authority of India.

== Exercise 1: Sketching the Landscape ==

'''Time frame: October 25 - November 15, 2011'''

'''''Student activities:'''''
* Creation of analytical drawings and sketches
* Presentation of results

''Please upload a selection of your drawings/sketches/mental maps and add them to the image gallery''

</gallery>

== Exercise 2: Landscape Layers ==

'''Time frame: November 15 - 29, 2011'''

*Classical analysis: topography, open spaces, built, green, traffic and water structures on different layers. *Definition of zones with coherent character
*Description of this character.

''Please publish your findings here''

== Exercise 3: Behaviour Patterns ==

'''Time frame: December 6 - 20, 2011'''
* How do people behave in this area? How do they use the space? What is important for them?
* Observation of study area, interviews with local people and mapping of use patterns.
* Preparation of short presentation

''Please publish your findings here''

== Exercise 4: Communication Concepts ==

'''Time frame: December 19, 2011 - January 17, 2012'''
* Based on the different landscape assessment approaches students will develop a communication concept for their area of study
* Which measures would be necessary for enhancing the awareness for the area?
* Students are free to choose their method.

''Please publish your findings here''
== Short Introduction to the Area of Study ==

== Exercise 1: Sketching the Landscape ==

'''Time frame: October 25 - November 15, 2011'''

'''''Student activities:'''''
* Creation of analytical drawings and sketches
* Presentation of results

''Please upload a selection of your drawings/sketches/mental maps and add them to the image gallery''
== Exercise 2: Landscape Layers ==

'''Time frame: November 15 - 29, 2011'''

*Classical analysis: topography, open spaces, built, green, traffic and water structures on different layers. *Definition of zones with coherent character
*Description of this character.

'''Time frame: December 6 - 20, 2011'''
* How do people behave in this area? How do they use the space? What is important for them?
* Observation of study area, interviews with local people and mapping of use patterns.
* Preparation of short presentation

''Please publish your findings here''
'''Time frame: December 19, 2011 - January 17, 2012'''
* Based on the different landscape assessment approaches students will develop a communication concept for their area of study
* Which measures would be necessary for enhancing the awareness for the area?
* Students are free to choose their method.
