The Oerliker Park was built in 2001 as part of the regional development project “Zentrum Zürich Nord” and was the first of four parks {MFO-Park (2002), Louis-Häfliger-Park (2003) and Wahlenpark (2005)}. The aim was to revamp the former industrial area and create attractive spaces to live and work. The Park covers an area of about 17’500 m2, multi-purpose and is open to the public. It was built on contaminated ground and this lead to the west side being slightly elevated to accommodate an addition of earth.
The Park was planted with trees (ash, birch, cherry, and paulownia trees) in a grid formation of 4x4 meters with some open spaces left for playgrounds and events. The trees would then be trimmed out including their roots to a grid size of 8x8 meters.
The present development shows that the trees have struggled to grow as well as intended due to substrate issues.

Objectives for Oerliker park, Hanneke Louws:

- Make the grid stronger to keep and strengthen the identity of the place

- Make difference between straight trees in grid and natural trees without grid

- Increase growth possibility by using plants with a purifying effect on the ground

Objectives for Oerliker park, Emil Tanner:

The current form of the Oerliker Park follows a strict geometrical form which is seen in the tree grid and the arrangement of the main surface divisions. One objective is to develop more organic forms in the design to contrast this lineal arrangement in the area as a whole. Because the trees form the main element of the planting design of the park, a huge emptiness remains when they lose their leaves in winter. A different design approach can allow the Park to still have an attractive and less empty appearance during the different seasons. This does not mean that the trees appearance (leaf color) over the season is not attractive at all. The contrast will be an important aspect in the planting design.

Objectives for Oerliker park, Adina Matroz:

- Increase safety and animate the space through new functions and design.

- Reduce the surface and the scale of the tree grid, while adapting to the tree’s needs.

- Introduce new plants in the planting design that would complement the existing ones visually, while purifying the soil.

- Design a low maintanance planting scheme.

- Encourage people to stay, sit, play and relax in the Oerliker Park.

The Oerliker Park was built in 2001 as part of the regional development project “Zentrum Zürich Nord” and was the first of four parks {MFO-Park (2002), Louis-Häfliger-Park (2003) and Wahlenpark (2005)}. The aim was to revamp the former industrial area and create attractive spaces to live and work. The Park covers an area of about 17’500 m2, multi-purpose and is open to the public. It was built on contaminated ground and this lead to the west side being slightly elevated to accommodate an addition of earth.
The Park was planted with trees (ash, birch, cherry, and paulownia trees) in a grid formation of 4x4 meters with some open spaces left for playgrounds and events. The trees would then be trimmed out including their roots to a grid size of 8x8 meters.
The present development shows that the trees have struggled to grow as well as intended due to substrate issues.

Objectives for Oerliker park, Hanneke Louws:

- Make the grid stronger to keep and strengthen the identity of the place

- Make difference between straight trees in grid and natural trees without grid

- Increase growth possibility by using plants with a purifying effect on the ground

Objectives for Oerliker, Emil Tanner:

The current form of the Oerliker Park follows a strict geometrical form which is seen in the tree grid and the arrangement of the main surface divisions. One objective is to develop more organic forms in the design to contrast this lineal arrangement in the area as a whole. Because the trees form the main element of the planting design of the park, a huge emptiness remains when they lose their leaves in winter. A different design approach can allow the Park to still have an attractive and less empty appearance during the different seasons. This does not mean that the trees appearance (leaf color) over the season is not attractive at all. The contrast will be an important aspect in the planting design.

Objectives for Oerliker, Adina Matroz:

- Increase safety and animate the space through new functions and design.

- Reduce the surface and the scale of the tree grid, while adapting to the tree’s needs.

- Introduce new plants in the planting design that would complement the existing ones visually, while purifying the soil.

- Design a low maintanance planting scheme.

- Encourage people to stay, sit, play and relax in the Oerliker Park.

Objectives for Oerliker park, Hanneke Louws:

- Make the grid stronger to keep and strengthen the identity of the place

- Make difference between straight trees in grid and natural trees without grid

- Increase growth possibility by using plants with a purifying effect on the ground

Objectives for Oerliker, Emil Tanner:

The current form of the Oerliker Park follows a strict geometrical form which is seen in the tree grid and the arrangement of the main surface divisions. One objective is to develop more organic forms in the design to contrast this lineal arrangement in the area as a whole. Because the trees form the main element of the planting design of the park, a huge emptiness remains when they lose their leaves in winter. A different design approach can allow the Park to still have an attractive and less empty appearance during the different seasons. This does not mean that the trees appearance (leaf color) over the season is not attractive at all. The contrast will be an important aspect in the planting design.

The Oerliker Park was built in 2001 as part of the regional development project “Zentrum Zürich Nord” and was the first of four parks {MFO-Park (2002), Louis-Häfliger-Park (2003) and Wahlenpark (2005)}. The aim was to revamp the former industrial area and create attractive spaces to live and work. The Park covers an area of about 17’500 m2, multi-purpose and is open to the public. It was built on contaminated ground and this lead to the west side being slightly elevated to accommodate an addition of earth.
The Park was planted with trees (ash, birch, cherry, and paulownia trees) in a grid formation of 4x4 meters with some open spaces left for playgrounds and events. The trees would then be trimmed out including their roots to a grid size of 8x8 meters.
The present development shows that the trees have struggled to grow as well as intended due to substrate issues.

The Oerliker Park was built in 2001 as part of the regional development project “Zentrum Zürich Nord” and was the first of four parks {MFO-Park (2002), Louis-Häfliger-Park (2003) and Wahlenpark (2005)}. The aim was to revamp the former industrial area and create attractive spaces to live and work. The Park covers an area of about 17’500 m2, multi-purpose and is open to the public. It was built on contaminated ground and this lead to the west side being slightly elevated to accommodate an addition of earth.
The Park was planted with trees (ash, birch, cherry, and paulownia trees) in a grid formation of 4x4 meters with some open spaces left for playgrounds and events. The trees would then be trimmed out including their roots to a grid size of 8x8 meters.
The present development shows that the trees have struggled to grow as well as intended due to substrate issues.
Important to note is that the participation of the neighborhood was and is very high in the development of the park.[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oerliker_Park]

Objectives for Oerliker park, Hanneke Louws:

- Make the grid stronger to keep and strengthen the identity of the place

- Make difference between straight trees in grid and natural trees without grid

- Increase growth possibility by using plants with a purifying effect on the ground

Objectives for Oerliker, Emil Tanner:

The current form of the Oerliker Park follows a strict geometrical form which is seen in the tree grid and the arrangement of the main surface divisions. One objective is to develop more organic forms in the design to contrast this lineal arrangement in the area as a whole. Because the trees form the main element of the planting design of the park, a huge emptiness remains when they lose their leaves in winter. A different design approach can allow the Park to still have an attractive and less empty appearance during the different seasons. This does not mean that the trees appearance (leaf color) over the season is not attractive at all. The contrast will be an important aspect in the planting design.

The University of Architecture and Urbanism Ion Mincu in Bucharest was built in 1916-1927 after Grigore Cerchez project on the grounds of an historical public garden called "Rasca" Garden. This was a very popular place for the high society of Bucharest in the late 19th century. Ulysse de Marsillac remembers: "The garden is brightly lit every night and on holidays, the lighting is dazzling. (…) Two orchestras play in two different corners of the garden. One is the Army Brass Band, the other the Orchestra of the Opera”. The garden bore the name of its Polish owner, Hrtschka (Hirtscha), impossible to pronounce for Romanians, who changed it to Raşca. The famous garden and restaurant visited so frequently by the local elite (...).” Nowdays, the interior terrace is used for experimental projects of arhitecrure students and sometimes for events. Planting wise, there are some old tall trees, that were planted at the time of the University's construction.

The construction of the University of Arhitecture "Ion Mincu", was made in two phases, first the historical wing was built in 1952, and the newest wing was finished in the late 70s'.At this last addition, the cortyard was shapped. It was designed at 2 levels: an elevated terrace ment to be a space for leisure and exhibition area, and a plannted space at the ground level. The plants that were used were tall trees like- Populus alba, Quercus robur, Aesculus hippocastanum. Both spaces can be viewed from inside of the university as a dynamic space.

The problem is that the green area is now used as a storage and a parking space, not being a well maintained space. Moreover, new vegetation has starded to emerge, species such as Fraxinus excelsior. And overall, the space is not that atractive through out the year. The most important feature of the planted area is the shilluete and the hight of the old trees, giving the elevated terrace a very natural touch.

Planning the projective design of the courtyard essentialy consists in enlarging the green space and trimming the existing trees. Introducing new species such as Betula pendula trees to unify the overall look of the garden, within new student experimental gardens with shrub, perrenial, annual based plants.

Sessonal change would effect the courtyard so that the students experimental gardens would be very dynamic green are with sitting areas and leisure activities.

Planning the projective design of the courtyard essentialy consists in enlarging the green space and trimming the existing trees. Introducing new species such as Betula pendula trees to unify the overall look of the garden within new student experimental gardens with shrub, perrenial, annual based plants.

The University of Architecture and Urbanism Ion Mincu in Bucharest was built in 1916-1927 after Grigore Cerchez project on the grounds of an historical public garden called "Rasca" Garden. This was a very popular place for the high society of Bucharest in the late 19th century. Ulysse de Marsillac remembers: "The garden is brightly lit every night and on holidays, the lighting is dazzling. (…) Two orchestras play in two different corners of the garden. One is the Army Brass Band, the other the Orchestra of the Opera”. The garden bore the name of its Polish owner, Hrtschka (Hirtscha), impossible to pronounce for Romanians, who changed it to Raşca. The famous garden and restaurant visited so frequently by the local elite (...).” Nowdays, the interior terrace is used for experimental projects of arhitecrure students and sometimes for events. Planting wise, there are some old tall trees, that were planted at the time of the University's construction.

The garden should function as a representative and symbolical space for the University of Arhitecture an Urbanism, but it lacks in space connectivity and visual atractivity.The existing plants are impressive for their silhouette and hight, and are always visible from inside the building. It is a neccesary an well intended green area, that does not fully meet its purpose, and it is in poor condition.

It is representative for relatively small and representative interior gardens.

It is the space where the Annual Masked Bal takes place and it is the main recreational space for students in summer and spring, so it has always been present durring the time I've spent in the Faculty of Landscape Planning.

The construction of the University of Arhitecture "Ion Mincu", was made in two phases, first the historical wing was built in 1952, and the newest wing was finished in the late 70s'.At this last addition, the cortyard was shapped. It was designed at 2 levels: an elevated terrace ment to be a space for leisure and exhibition area, and a plannted space at the ground level. The plants that were used were tall trees like- Populus alba, Quercus robur, Aesculus hippocastanum. Both spaces can be viewed from inside of the university as a dynamic space.

The problem is that the green area is now used as a storage and a parking space, not being a well maintained space. Moreover, new vegetation has starded to emerge, species such as Fraxinus excelsior. And overall, the space is not that atractive through out the year. The most important feature of the planted area is the shilluete and the hight of the old trees, giving the elevated terrace a very natural touch.
