=== Rationale: Why is this case study interesting? ===

Parelheiros district, which is part of Sao Paulo Greenbelt and inserted on the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve where considerable forest remnants and natural streams still exist. It is also on the watershed area that produces part of the water consummed by the City’s population. Agriculture is a traditional activity in the greenbelt area and speciffically in Parelheiros with the production of fruits and vegetables for local distribution. The conservation of this land use can be seen as strattegical to maintain areas wiithout urban uses and can be an important way to restrict urban sprawl. This case study has as main objective develop trought a ecological landscape planning process identifying the most suitable areas for organic food production in Parelheiros district, and defining its integration with the existing forest patches, streams and wet areas as well as a way to improve the social and economic conditions of the dwellers.

The maintenance and development of agricultural land-use in the area is seen as part of the Caulim Creek Neighborshed - Green Infrastructure Plan for Informal Settlement in Watershed Area of São Paulo Metropolitan Region, as shown in the Urban Landscape Seminar 2008. In this way, we realize that agriculture is important to the history of Parelheiros, and at the same time can be seen as one strategy to conserve the metropolitan greenbelt, better exploring its potential uses beyond water, biodiversity and tourism, and adding more social and economic interests in the conservation of the area as buffer zones for the forests core areas.

The history of agriculture in Parelheiros is recorded since the XIV century, just after the arrival of the first Europeans conquistadores that interacted with local native inhabitants and its traditional cultures.
In 1920 Japanese immigrants arrived to work in the coffee plantations, but after the 29 economical debacle, they acquired lands nearby the City and started to plant orchards and vegetables, introducing new species and diversifying the locals diets.
Sao Paulo is the Brazilian financial and economic hub, attracting people from all over the country, part of them disqualified workers, and besides that they had come mostly form other rural areas, they were unused with the requirements of such a environmental sensitive area, as they were forced to the outer fringes of the City by the social exclusion that marked the period.

=== Rationale: Why is this case study interesting? ===

Parelheiros district, which is part of Sao Paulo Greenbelt and inserted on the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve where considerable forest remnants and natural streams still exist. It is also on the watershed area that produces part of the water consummed by the City’s population. Agriculture is a traditional activity in the greenbelt area and speciffically in Parelheiros with the production of fruits and vegetables for local distribution. The conservation of this land use can be seen as strattegical to maintain areas wiithout urban uses and can be an important way to restrict urban sprawl. This case study has as main objective develop trought a ecological landscape planning process identifying the most suitable areas for organic food production in Parelheiros district, and defining its integration with the existing forest patches, streams and wet areas as well as a way to improve the social and economic conditions of the dwellers.

The maintenance and development of agricultural land-use in the area is seen as part of the Caulim Creek Neighborshed - Green Infrastructure Plan for Informal Settlement in Watershed Area of São Paulo Metropolitan Region, as shown in the Urban Landscape Seminar 2008. In this way, we realize that agriculture is important to the history of Parelheiros, and at the same time can be seen as one strategy to conserve the metropolitan greenbelt, better exploring its potential uses beyond water, biodiversity and tourism, and adding more social and economic interests in the conservation of the area as buffer zones for the forests core areas.

"Landscape planning" is a less dealed and sometimes missing instrument in rural development activities, especially in developing regions/countries.In these areas, "development" demands and criterias are generally being tried to be met in short terms without considering many aspects of "sustainability".As a result, desired "development" is becoming more unfeasible, more challenging. Additionally, increasing demands and requirements of communities making this challenge more complex, nearly in most of the developing countries and regions. Therefore,landscape planning activities those may have both short term results and long term effects should be integrated in rural development activities.

In this context, according to the natural and cultural features of the area, main landscape planning activities which can contribute to the development of Van City will be determined,

This case study may contribute to the similar efforts in rural landscapes. Also, it may contribute the knowledge on "landscape planning-rural development" connection.

Van is a city in the eastern part of Turkey, near the border of Iran.
It is located at an elevation of 1750 m. It covers an area of 4080 hectares.
Van region features mountainous terrain with harsh winters.Steppe flora is common around the City.
Additional to terrestial climate conditions, antropogenic effects, those ongoing for hunderd years, are the most important reasons of deforestration in Van.

The City lies on the eastern shore of Lake Van. Lake Van lies on the lowest part of Lake Van Basin,bordered by high mountains to the south, by plateaus and mountains to the east, and by a complex of volcanic cones to the west. Lake Van is the largest body of water in Turkey and the second largest in the Middle East. Brackish waters of Lake, are unsuitable for either drinking or irrigation.

City takes its name from Lake Van.“Van” is the name of the capital of the Urartian Kingdom that flourished on the Lake's eastern shore between the 10th and 8th centuries BC.

Van was the ancient Urartian capital of Tuspa, the capital of the powerful Urartu kingdom between the 10th and 8th centuries BC. In succeeding years, Van was under the control of the Persians, Byzantines, Arabs, Seljuks and Ottomans. Old Van was completely destroyed by the end of World War I (1914-1918) after being occupied by Russian forces.The surrounding area is full of remains from Urantians to Ottomans.

Over the last 50 years, the world has faced dramatic growth of its urban population. In 2007 the amount of urban residents has outnumbered the rural population for the first time in history and by the year 2030 already two-thirds of the world’s population is expected to live in cities. The number of so-called megacities –cities with more than 10 million inhabitants– increased in the period from 1975 until today from 4 to 22, mostly in less developed regions. Furthermore, a United Nations report projects that almost all global population growth in the next 30 years will be concentrated in urban areas. This dynamic phenomenon will necessitate advanced methodologies such as spatial technologies, which will help planners solve the problems accompanying with the city growth. In this uncontrolled situation, planners need tools to measure, monitor, and understand urban sprawl and landscape change processes. Therefore, landscapes at the fringe are a frequently overlooked asset within spatial planning, for example regarding wildlife and recreation, but also for the character and green structure of the city of tomorrow. The interpretation of areas along the rural-urban fringe is often characterized by the awareness that these landscapes are sooner or later to be transformed. For centuries, city edges have been associated with waste and wastelands. Refuse dumps have frequently been located at the outskirts of the city, and the metaphor of ‘wasteland’ has been used to depict landscapes at the urban fringe. After 1970s, process of sprawl in megacity of Istanbul brought about an inevitable contact with the new residential areas and existing wastelands. Therefore, in the second half of 1990’s owing to the risks they posed on environmental health and safety, 5 irregular solid waste disposal sites were reclaimed according to engineering techniques. However, after their reclamations they left non functional. Today owing to their transition potentials these sites and their surrounding areas are selected as the case areas of this study.

Main objective of this research is to monitor and estimate land use changes for the benefit of sustainable landscape change. Hence, the objective is to monitor temporal changes and spatial distribution of land uses in order to identify main driving forces of peri-urban landscape transformation. Related materials are:

● On-site observations, historical photographs, documentations
● 1/5000 scaled construction plans

Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, largest city proper and second largest metropolitan area in Europe, and fourth largest city proper in the world with a population of 12.6 million. Istanbul is also a megacity, as well as the cultural and financial center of Turkey. It is located on the Bosphorus Strait and encompasses the natural harbor known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country. It extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) sides of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world that is situated on two continents. In its long history, Istanbul has served as the capital city of the Roman Empire (330–395), the East Roman (Byzantine) Empire (395–1204 and 1261–1453), the Latin Empire (1204–1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453–1922). On the political aspect, due to the very location of Yanjiao, which belongs to the big Peking economic circle, local government is intended to maximize the scope of the whole town.
The viewpoint of landscape architect is on the contrary.Regarding the severe fragmentation of the landuse in peri-urban area close to Peking, the crucial issue is that if the build up of greenbelt could virtually work as a barrier to isolate the building up of the city from the farming land.

This case study is firstly applied as the main topic of bachelor thesis by Ran Tao,Beijing Forestry University[http://www.bjfu.edu.cn/].In the very beginning,the purpose of the project, as the very pioneer work central park in new York city has established, is to spare a recreational area in advance.
As a matter of fact,the development of Yanjiao is a mirror reflecting the urbanization of rural area in China. With the re construction of economics, with the redundancy of farming population surging to the city to seek to work chance, the urbanization trends seems to be irreversible.However, how to deal with the change in a sustainable way is the key issue of landscape architecture profession in the next several years.
Here we extract this whole story, to formulate two possible consequence of the ending.

Yanjiao, literally the surburb of the Kingdom Yan(Peking), is 30km away from Tian'anmen Square, 25Km away from Capital airport.
Located in Yanshan Plain, which is originated from the alluvial deposition from ChaoBai river,JiYun river, the average level of Yanjiao is 5.9-31.9 meter above Huanghai.
The site of this project is situated on the border of Yanjiao town and Gaoqiao town.Compared to Yanjiao,Gaoqiao(literaly High bridge)is less urbanized,in which vast majority of farming land are maintained.
With the population explosion and ireversible urban development of Metropolitan Peking and the adjancent town, Yanjiao and Gaoqiao are quite likely to be virtually converted to the satellite town of Peking(see also political context).
The outlook of this greenbelt project is afterall ambiguous.If the urbanization keeps its pace to speed up. the greebelt may serve as a sheer recreation site for local inhabitants in which sense will lose its rural property. In another case, when the urban development managed to be curbed.The greenbelt may act as a joint for urbanized area and rural farming land.

Even the very first origin of Yanjiao is closely linked to Peking.It flourished with the booming of Peking, sinked in oblivion with the fall of the city.
However,entering into the 21th centry, the relationship between Peking and Yanjiao comes in to a dilema.
The urban development of Peking follows a evenly expanding fashion, only in a decade, the edge of the city was pushed from ring 2,3 to ring 5,6.Furthermore, the consistent expanding trend seems hard to be impeded at least in the next decade.
Due to the congregation of population in the city center, more hints show that a new inclination of migrating towards the rural area which adjancent to Peking, has been developed.
Yanjiao is naturally a perfect place to settle down for most young immigrants.Actually, the sale of real estate in Yanjiao has soared to a new high in the recent several years, which, act as a fuse to induce the new exploit of the residential area in this region.
To this point,the local government is intended to grasp the chance to develope by strengthening the relationship between Yanjiao and Peking.
However, the barrier, which hinder the bridging of co-developement of Yanjiao and Peking, exist in the political framework.
Diverged to Western urban development, Chinese urban developement strictly adhere to the political framework, drafted by central government.
Regarding the administration framework of The metropolitan city Peking, Yanjiao is definitely excluded.
If Yanjiao need to develop, how to develop, where to develop became the main issue not only in the field of economics bu also urban and landscdape planning.

"Landscape planning" is a less dealed and sometimes missing instrument in rural development activities, especially in developing regions/countries.In these areas, "development" demands and criterias are generally being tried to be met in short terms without considering many aspects of "sustainability".As a result, desired "development" is becoming more unfeasible, more challenging. Additionally, increasing demands and requirements of communities making this challenge more complex, nearly in most of the developing countries and regions. Therefore,landscape planning activities those may have both short term results and long term effects should be integrated in rural development activities.

In this context, according to the natural and cultural features of the area, main landscape planning activities which can contribute to the development of Van City will be determined,

This case study may contribute to the similar efforts in rural landscapes. Also, it may contribute the knowledge on "landscape planning-rural development" connection.

Van is a city in the eastern part of Turkey, near the border of Iran.
It is located at an elevation of 1750 m. It covers an area of 4080 hectares.
Van region features mountainous terrain with harsh winters.Steppe flora is common around the City.
Additional to terrestial climate conditions, antropogenic effects, those ongoing for hunderd years, are the most important reasons of deforestration in Van.

The City lies on the eastern shore of Lake Van. Lake Van lies on the lowest part of Lake Van Basin,bordered by high mountains to the south, by plateaus and mountains to the east, and by a complex of volcanic cones to the west. Lake Van is the largest body of water in Turkey and the second largest in the Middle East. Brackish waters of Lake, are unsuitable for either drinking or irrigation.

City takes its name from Lake Van.“Van” is the name of the capital of the Urartian Kingdom that flourished on the Lake's eastern shore between the 10th and 8th centuries BC.

Van was the ancient Urartian capital of Tuspa, the capital of the powerful Urartu kingdom between the 10th and 8th centuries BC. In succeeding years, Van was under the control of the Persians, Byzantines, Arabs, Seljuks and Ottomans. Old Van was completely destroyed by the end of World War I (1914-1918) after being occupied by Russian forces.The surrounding area is full of remains from Urantians to Ottomans.

Over the last 50 years, the world has faced dramatic growth of its urban population. In 2007 the amount of urban residents has outnumbered the rural population for the first time in history and by the year 2030 already two-thirds of the world’s population is expected to live in cities. The number of so-called megacities –cities with more than 10 million inhabitants– increased in the period from 1975 until today from 4 to 22, mostly in less developed regions. Furthermore, a United Nations report projects that almost all global population growth in the next 30 years will be concentrated in urban areas. This dynamic phenomenon will necessitate advanced methodologies such as spatial technologies, which will help planners solve the problems accompanying with the city growth. In this uncontrolled situation, planners need tools to measure, monitor, and understand urban sprawl and landscape change processes. Therefore, landscapes at the fringe are a frequently overlooked asset within spatial planning, for example regarding wildlife and recreation, but also for the character and green structure of the city of tomorrow. The interpretation of areas along the rural-urban fringe is often characterized by the awareness that these landscapes are sooner or later to be transformed. For centuries, city edges have been associated with waste and wastelands. Refuse dumps have frequently been located at the outskirts of the city, and the metaphor of ‘wasteland’ has been used to depict landscapes at the urban fringe. After 1970s, process of sprawl in megacity of Istanbul brought about an inevitable contact with the new residential areas and existing wastelands. Therefore, in the second half of 1990’s owing to the risks they posed on environmental health and safety, 5 irregular solid waste disposal sites were reclaimed according to engineering techniques. However, after their reclamations they left non functional. Today owing to their transition potentials these sites and their surrounding areas are selected as the case areas of this study.

Main objective of this research is to monitor and estimate land use changes for the benefit of sustainable landscape change. Hence, the objective is to monitor temporal changes and spatial distribution of land uses in order to identify main driving forces of peri-urban landscape transformation. Related materials are:

Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, largest city proper and second largest metropolitan area in Europe, and fourth largest city proper in the world with a population of 12.6 million. Istanbul is also a megacity, as well as the cultural and financial center of Turkey. It is located on the Bosphorus Strait and encompasses the natural harbor known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country. It extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) sides of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world that is situated on two continents. In its long history, Istanbul has served as the capital city of the Roman Empire (330–395), the East Roman (Byzantine) Empire (395–1204 and 1261–1453), the Latin Empire (1204–1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453–1922). The city was chosen as joint European Capital of Culture for 2010. The historic areas of Istanbul were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.

On the political aspect, due to the very location of Yanjiao, which belongs to the big Peking economic circle, local government is intended to maximize the scope of the whole town.
The viewpoint of landscape architect is on the contrary.Regarding the severe fragmentation of the landuse in peri-urban area close to Peking, the crucial issue is that if the build up of greenbelt could virtually work as a barrier to isolate the building up of the city from the farming land.

This case study is firstly applied as the main topic of bachelor thesis by Ran Tao,Beijing Forestry University[http://www.bjfu.edu.cn/].In the very beginning,the purpose of the project, as the very pioneer work central park in new York city has established, is to spare a recreational area in advance.
As a matter of fact,the development of Yanjiao is a mirror reflecting the urbanization of rural area in China. With the re construction of economics, with the redundancy of farming population surging to the city to seek to work chance, the urbanization trends seems to be irreversible.However, how to deal with the change in a sustainable way is the key issue of landscape architecture profession in the next several years.
Here we extract this whole story, to formulate two possible consequence of the ending.

Yanjiao, literally the surburb of the Kingdom Yan(Peking), is 30km away from Tian'anmen Square, 25Km away from Capital airport.
Located in Yanshan Plain, which is originated from the alluvial deposition from ChaoBai river,JiYun river, the average level of Yanjiao is 5.9-31.9 meter above Huanghai.
The site of this project is situated on the border of Yanjiao town and Gaoqiao town.Compared to Yanjiao,Gaoqiao(literaly High bridge)is less urbanized,in which vast majority of farming land are maintained.
With the population explosion and ireversible urban development of Metropolitan Peking and the adjancent town, Yanjiao and Gaoqiao are quite likely to be virtually converted to the satellite town of Peking(see also political context).
The outlook of this greenbelt project is afterall ambiguous.If the urbanization keeps its pace to speed up. the greebelt may serve as a sheer recreation site for local inhabitants in which sense will lose its rural property. In another case, when the urban development managed to be curbed.The greenbelt may act as a joint for urbanized area and rural farming land.

Even the very first origin of Yanjiao is closely linked to Peking.It flourished with the booming of Peking, sinked in oblivion with the fall of the city.
However,entering into the 21th centry, the relationship between Peking and Yanjiao comes in to a dilema.
The urban development of Peking follows a evenly expanding fashion, only in a decade, the edge of the city was pushed from ring 2,3 to ring 5,6.Furthermore, the consistent expanding trend seems hard to be impeded at least in the next decade.
Due to the congregation of population in the city center, more hints show that a new inclination of migrating towards the rural area which adjancent to Peking, has been developed.
Yanjiao is naturally a perfect place to settle down for most young immigrants.Actually, the sale of real estate in Yanjiao has soared to a new high in the recent several years, which, act as a fuse to induce the new exploit of the residential area in this region.
To this point,the local government is intended to grasp the chance to develope by strengthening the relationship between Yanjiao and Peking.
However, the barrier, which hinder the bridging of co-developement of Yanjiao and Peking, exist in the political framework.
Diverged to Western urban development, Chinese urban developement strictly adhere to the political framework, drafted by central government.
Regarding the administration framework of The metropolitan city Peking, Yanjiao is definitely excluded.
If Yanjiao need to develop, how to develop, where to develop became the main issue not only in the field of economics bu also urban and landscdape planning.

Parelheiros district, which is part of Sao Paulo Greenbelt and inserted on the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve where considerable forest remnants and natural streams still exist. It is also on the watershed area that produces part of the water consummed by the City’s population. Agriculture is a traditional activity in the greenbelt area and speciffically in Parelheiros with the production of fruits and vegetables for local distribution. The conservation of this land use can be seen as strattegical to maintain areas wiithout urban uses and can be an important way to restrict urban sprawl. This case study has as main objective develop trought a ecological landscape planning process identifying the most suitable areas for organic food production in Parelheiros district, and defining its integration with the existing forest patches, streams and wet areas as well as a way to improve the social and economic conditions of the dwellers.

The maintenance and development of agricultural land-use in the area is seen as part of the Caulim Creek Neighborshed - Green Infrastructure Plan for Informal Settlement in Watershed Area of São Paulo Metropolitan Region, as shown in the Urban Landscape Seminar 2008. In this way, we realize that agriculture is important to the history of Parelheiros, and at the same time can be seen as one strategy to conserve the metropolitan greenbelt, better exploring its potential uses beyond water, biodiversity and tourism, and adding more social and economic interests in the conservation of the area as buffer zones for the forests core areas.

The history of agriculture in Parelheiros is recorded since the XIV century, just after the arrival of the first Europeans conquistadores that interacted with local native inhabitants and its traditional cultures.
In 1920 Japanese immigrants arrived to work in the coffee plantations, but after the 29 economical debacle, they acquired lands nearby the City and started to plant orchards and vegetables, introducing new species and diversifying the locals diets.
Sao Paulo is the Brazilian financial and economic hub, attracting people from all over the country, part of them disqualified workers, and besides that they had come mostly form other rural areas, they were unused with the requirements of such a environmental sensitive area, as they were forced to the outer fringes of the City by the social exclusion that marked the period.

=== Rationale: Why is this case study interesting? ===

Parelheiros district, which is part of Sao Paulo Greenbelt and inserted on the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve where considerable forest remnants and natural streams still exist. It is also on the watershed area that produces part of the water consummed by the City’s population. Agriculture is a traditional activity in the greenbelt area and speciffically in Parelheiros with the production of fruits and vegetables for local distribution. The conservation of this land use can be seen as strattegical to maintain areas wiithout urban uses and can be an important way to restrict urban sprawl. This case study has as main objective develop trought a ecological landscape planning process identifying the most suitable areas for organic food production in Parelheiros district, and defining its integration with the existing forest patches, streams and wet areas as well as a way to improve the social and economic conditions of the dwellers.

The maintenance and development of agricultural land-use in the area is seen as part of the Caulim Creek Neighborshed - Green Infrastructure Plan for Informal Settlement in Watershed Area of São Paulo Metropolitan Region, as shown in the Urban Landscape Seminar 2008. In this way, we realize that agriculture is important to the history of Parelheiros, and at the same time can be seen as one strategy to conserve the metropolitan greenbelt, better exploring its potential uses beyond water, biodiversity and tourism, and adding more social and economic interests in the conservation of the area as buffer zones for the forests core areas.

The history of agriculture in Parelheiros is recorded since the XIV century, just after the arrival of the first Europeans conquistadores that interacted with local native inhabitants and its traditional cultures.
In 1920 Japanese immigrants arrived to work in the coffee plantations, but after the 29 economical debacle, they acquired lands nearby the City and started to plant orchards and vegetables, introducing new species and diversifying the locals diets.
Sao Paulo is the Brazilian financial and economic hub, attracting people from all over the country, part of them disqualified workers, and besides that they had come mostly form other rural areas, they were unused with the requirements of such a environmental sensitive area, as they were forced to the outer fringes of the City by the social exclusion that marked the period.

"Landscape planning" is a less dealed and sometimes missing instrument in rural development activities, especially in developing regions/countries.In these areas, "development" demands and criterias are generally being tried to be met in short terms without considering many aspects of "sustainability".As a result, desired "development" is becoming more unfeasible, more challenging. Additionally, increasing demands and requirements of communities making this challenge more complex, nearly in most of the developing countries and regions. Therefore,landscape planning activities those may have both short term results and long term effects should be integrated in rural development activities.

In this context, according to the natural and cultural features of the area, main landscape planning activities which can contribute to the development of Van City will be determined,

This case study may contribute to the similar efforts in rural landscapes. Also, it may contribute the knowledge on "landscape planning-rural development" connection.

Van is a city in the eastern part of Turkey, near the border of Iran.
It is located at an elevation of 1750 m. It covers an area of 4080 hectares.
Van region features mountainous terrain with harsh winters.Steppe flora is common around the City.
Additional to terrestial climate conditions, antropogenic effects, those ongoing for hunderd years, are the most important reasons of deforestration in Van.

The City lies on the eastern shore of Lake Van. Lake Van lies on the lowest part of Lake Van Basin,bordered by high mountains to the south, by plateaus and mountains to the east, and by a complex of volcanic cones to the west. Lake Van is the largest body of water in Turkey and the second largest in the Middle East. Brackish waters of Lake, are unsuitable for either drinking or irrigation.

City takes its name from Lake Van.“Van” is the name of the capital of the Urartian Kingdom that flourished on the Lake's eastern shore between the 10th and 8th centuries BC.

Van was the ancient Urartian capital of Tuspa, the capital of the powerful Urartu kingdom between the 10th and 8th centuries BC. In succeeding years, Van was under the control of the Persians, Byzantines, Arabs, Seljuks and Ottomans. Old Van was completely destroyed by the end of World War I (1914-1918) after being occupied by Russian forces.The surrounding area is full of remains from Urantians to Ottomans.

Over the last 50 years, the world has faced dramatic growth of its urban population. In 2007 the amount of urban residents has outnumbered the rural population for the first time in history and by the year 2030 already two-thirds of the world’s population is expected to live in cities. The number of so-called megacities –cities with more than 10 million inhabitants– increased in the period from 1975 until today from 4 to 22, mostly in less developed regions. Furthermore, a United Nations report projects that almost all global population growth in the next 30 years will be concentrated in urban areas. This dynamic phenomenon will necessitate advanced methodologies such as spatial technologies, which will help planners solve the problems accompanying with the city growth. In this uncontrolled situation, planners need tools to measure, monitor, and understand urban sprawl and landscape change processes. Therefore, landscapes at the fringe are a frequently overlooked asset within spatial planning, for example regarding wildlife and recreation, but also for the character and green structure of the city of tomorrow. The interpretation of areas along the rural-urban fringe is often characterized by the awareness that these landscapes are sooner or later to be transformed. For centuries, city edges have been associated with waste and wastelands. Refuse dumps have frequently been located at the outskirts of the city, and the metaphor of ‘wasteland’ has been used to depict landscapes at the urban fringe. After 1970s, process of sprawl in megacity of Istanbul brought about an inevitable contact with the new residential areas and existing wastelands. Therefore, in the second half of 1990’s owing to the risks they posed on environmental health and safety, 5 irregular solid waste disposal sites were reclaimed according to engineering techniques. However, after their reclamations they left non functional. Today owing to their transition potentials these sites and their surrounding areas are selected as the case areas of this study.

Main objective of this research is to monitor and estimate land use changes for the benefit of sustainable landscape change. Hence, the objective is to monitor temporal changes and spatial distribution of land uses in order to identify main driving forces of peri-urban landscape transformation. Related materials are:

Istanbul is the largest city in Turkey, largest city proper and second largest metropolitan area in Europe, and fourth largest city proper in the world with a population of 12.6 million. Istanbul is also a megacity, as well as the cultural and financial center of Turkey. It is located on the Bosphorus Strait and encompasses the natural harbor known as the Golden Horn, in the northwest of the country. It extends both on the European (Thrace) and on the Asian (Anatolia) sides of the Bosphorus, and is thereby the only metropolis in the world that is situated on two continents. In its long history, Istanbul has served as the capital city of the Roman Empire (330–395), the East Roman (Byzantine) Empire (395–1204 and 1261–1453), the Latin Empire (1204–1261), and the Ottoman Empire (1453–1922). The city was chosen as joint European Capital of Culture for 2010. The historic areas of Istanbul were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.

On the political aspect, due to the very location of Yanjiao, which belongs to the big Peking economic circle, local government is intended to maximize the scope of the whole town.
The viewpoint of landscape architect is on the contrary.Regarding the severe fragmentation of the landuse in peri-urban area close to Peking, the crucial issue is that if the build up of greenbelt could virtually work as a barrier to isolate the building up of the city from the farming land.

This case study is firstly applied as the main topic of bachelor thesis by Ran Tao,Beijing Forestry University[http://www.bjfu.edu.cn/].In the very beginning,the purpose of the project, as the very pioneer work central park in new York city has established, is to spare a recreational area in advance.
As a matter of fact,the development of Yanjiao is a mirror reflecting the urbanization of rural area in China. With the re construction of economics, with the redundancy of farming population surging to the city to seek to work chance, the urbanization trends seems to be irreversible.However, how to deal with the change in a sustainable way is the key issue of landscape architecture profession in the next several years.
Here we extract this whole story, to formulate two possible consequence of the ending.

Yanjiao, literally the surburb of the Kingdom Yan(Peking), is 30km away from Tian'anmen Square, 25Km away from Capital airport.
Located in Yanshan Plain, which is originated from the alluvial deposition from ChaoBai river,JiYun river, the average level of Yanjiao is 5.9-31.9 meter above Huanghai.
The site of this project is situated on the border of Yanjiao town and Gaoqiao town.Compared to Yanjiao,Gaoqiao(literaly High bridge)is less urbanized,in which vast majority of farming land are maintained.
With the population explosion and ireversible urban development of Metropolitan Peking and the adjancent town, Yanjiao and Gaoqiao are quite likely to be virtually converted to the satellite town of Peking(see also political context).
The outlook of this greenbelt project is afterall ambiguous.If the urbanization keeps its pace to speed up. the greebelt may serve as a sheer recreation site for local inhabitants in which sense will lose its rural property. In another case, when the urban development managed to be curbed.The greenbelt may act as a joint for urbanized area and rural farming land.

Even the very first origin of Yanjiao is closely linked to Peking.It flourished with the booming of Peking, sinked in oblivion with the fall of the city.
However,entering into the 21th centry, the relationship between Peking and Yanjiao comes in to a dilema.
The urban development of Peking follows a evenly expanding fashion, only in a decade, the edge of the city was pushed from ring 2,3 to ring 5,6.Furthermore, the consistent expanding trend seems hard to be impeded at least in the next decade.
Due to the congregation of population in the city center, more hints show that a new inclination of migrating towards the rural area which adjancent to Peking, has been developed.
Yanjiao is naturally a perfect place to settle down for most young immigrants.Actually, the sale of real estate in Yanjiao has soared to a new high in the recent several years, which, act as a fuse to induce the new exploit of the residential area in this region.
To this point,the local government is intended to grasp the chance to develope by strengthening the relationship between Yanjiao and Peking.
However, the barrier, which hinder the bridging of co-developement of Yanjiao and Peking, exist in the political framework.
Diverged to Western urban development, Chinese urban developement strictly adhere to the political framework, drafted by central government.
Regarding the administration framework of The metropolitan city Peking, Yanjiao is definitely excluded.
If Yanjiao need to develop, how to develop, where to develop became the main issue not only in the field of economics bu also urban and landscdape planning.

=== Rationale: Why is this case study interesting? ===

Parelheiros district, which is part of Sao Paulo Greenbelt and inserted on the Atlantic Forest Biosphere Reserve where considerable forest remnants and natural streams still exist. It is also on the watershed area that produces part of the water consummed by the City’s population. Agriculture is a traditional activity in the greenbelt area and speciffically in Parelheiros with the production of fruits and vegetables for local distribution. The conservation of this land use can be seen as strattegical to maintain areas wiithout urban uses and can be an important way to restrict urban sprawl. This case study has as main objective develop trought a ecological landscape planning process identifying the most suitable areas for organic food production in Parelheiros district, and defining its integration with the existing forest patches, streams and wet areas as well as a way to improve the social and economic conditions of the dwellers.

The maintenance and development of agricultural land-use in the area is seen as part of the Caulim Creek Neighborshed - Green Infrastructure Plan for Informal Settlement in Watershed Area of São Paulo Metropolitan Region, as shown in the Urban Landscape Seminar 2008. In this way, we realize that agriculture is important to the history of Parelheiros, and at the same time can be seen as one strategy to conserve the metropolitan greenbelt, better exploring its potential uses beyond water, biodiversity and tourism, and adding more social and economic interests in the conservation of the area as buffer zones for the forests core areas.

The history of agriculture in Parelheiros is recorded since the XIV century, just after the arrival of the first Europeans conquistadores that interacted with local native inhabitants and its traditional cultures.
In 1920 Japanese immigrants arrived to work in the coffee plantations, but after the 29 economical debacle, they acquired lands nearby the City and started to plant orchards and vegetables, introducing new species and diversifying the locals diets.
Sao Paulo is the Brazilian financial and economic hub, attracting people from all over the country, part of them disqualified workers, and besides that they had come mostly form other rural areas, they were unused with the requirements of such a environmental sensitive area, as they were forced to the outer fringes of the City by the social exclusion that marked the period.
